The World Design Summit Organisation Launches Second Call for Proposals

Montréal, Canada

World Design Summit Organization (WDSO)

Montréal, Canada, 2017-03-21 -

Following the unveiling of the 108 Congress discussion topics, The World Design Summit Organization (WDSO) has launched the second Call for Proposals for Congress presentations. This second Call for Proposals builds on the successful first call that generated some 350 submissions from over 40 countries.

Designers, educators, students, influencers and agents of change from six disciplines of design are invited to submit their Proposals for Presentations, to be reviewed by the Scientific and Professional Committee of the World Design Summit – Montréal 2017.  Under the overarching theme “Changing the World through Design”, the Committee has developed 6 sub-themes and 108 topics that will frame the presentations and discussions to take place over the duration of the Congress from October 16 to 20, 2017.

The topics were selected with the objective of upholding the highest criteria of quality, excellence and critical thinking, in order to build a program worthy of the Summit's ambition. Transcending discipline silos, the 108 topics ask pressing questions that demand cutting-edge, sustainable, socially-advanced and paradigm-shifting solutions to the global challenges that will define this Century.

The six sub-themes read as follows: Design for Participation; Design for Earth; Design for Beauty; Design for Sale?; Design for Transformation; Design for extremes.

The wide-ranging list of 108 topics includes questions and issues such as:

1. Questioning Greenwashing

11. Can greater density and proximity services help limit land consumption, encourage active mobility and create sustainable cities?

12. Environmental methodologies

33. How does co-production require that experts retool their own skillsets?

40. How can the various design disciplines be open to the world from the perspective of decolonization of design education?

59. How can beauty be reinvested in its humanist dimension in design, and how can it bring the very foundations of the social responsibility of design with it?

83. Is design intrinsically a risk?

89. Capitalizing natural resources: Taking a stance on environmental change

94. How can the designer participate in inclusion and limit situations of social exclusion, in a world influenced by the comparison of products, services, perception of images and other sources of power?

101. Manmade disasters.

Multiple proposal formats are accepted, including research papers, case studies, workshops and panel discussions.

The applicants selected as speakers or panelists will be invited to join a Congress Cohort
based on their topic, stimulating deeper discussions and a more impactful Congress experience. The main objective of each Cohort will be to present one official recommendation to the international organizations participating in the World Design Summit General Assembly, taking place on October 23, 24 and 25, 2017.  The General Assembly is the historic gathering of fifty international organizations who will develop a joint declaration of intent and an implementation framework for the use of design as an economic driver and as a mechanism to exert positive political, social and environmental change.

Interested applicants are invited to submit their proposals via the dedicated platform at, as of 13 March 2017 at 9 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time) until 4 June, 2017 at 5 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).

The World Design Summit – Montréal 2017 (WDSM), of which the general theme is "Changing the World through Design", is a world-class event that will assemble a huge number of design experts, clients, suppliers and enthusiasts from all over the world  in Montréal's Palais des congrès from October 16 to 25, 2017. Architects, designers and urban planners will collaboratively endeavour to develop and share innovative and practical solutions to the social, spatial, energy and environmental challenges of the 21st century, and to present them to private and public sector decision-makers and the public at large.

The World Design Summit has been flagged as one of the "not-to-be-missed" events of 2017 by digital news platform Quartz.
