Society for Arts and Technology (SAT)

Montréal, Canada, 02-10-2014 -

MISCIBLE is an audiovisual and interactive networked experience, standing between performance and installation. Audiences of the Society for Arts and Technology in Montréal [SAT], and Diapason, in Rennes, interact in real time to create an audiovisual show. The artists investigate a new way of approaching telepresence by giving it a sensorial dimension and offering an experience going beyond the telecommunication tools currently available. They built the project with three Professors -researchers in Chemistry and Electronics from the Université de Rennes1.

In an arts and science evening, the audience will participate together to the creation of different sound and visual landscapes, by handling a multimedia device transforming science laboratory material into a digital art creation tool.

The main theme of the work is the creation of virtual proximity between the two venues. During the performance, the actions executed by the audience members in Rennes and Montréal will meet, then gradually get more intense, until a perfect homogeneity is achieved:  their miscibility. Miscible is an initiative by the cultural service of the Université Rennes 1, the Society for Arts and Technology [SAT] in Montréal, with support from Electroni[k], Rennes Métropole, the Fonds Franco Québécois de Coopération Décentralisée, the Ministère des Relations Internationales du Québec and the Ville de Rennes.

ABOUT SCENIC

The Scenic software suite is a powerful tool, simple and open source, for transmitting high quality audio, video and data streams though the Internet. It was created with, in mind, artists from every discipline, architects and designers interested in distributed contexts and computer network experiences. Developed at the Society for Arts and Technology [SAT] using the open-source software approach, Scenic2 uses broadband Internet networks to experiment with new forms of telepresence, teleoperation, remote collaborative work and networked performances.

ABOUT CONTAMINE SAT – DIAPASON

Context and challenges

The numerous exchanges between Rennes Métropole and the province of Québec in the last two years have brought closer many cultural, academic and economic actors. They have shown that projects around the Digital City theme, including digital arts projects, were unifying and met both territories’ expectations.

The project built by the SAT and Diapason (Université de Rennes1) is one of the art residencies using Scenic, creating telepresence artworks between two places, giving the feeling of touching the other in a distant land, to discern its body in one’s own environment. It is a shared experience that falls within the framework of the “Contamine” exchange project initiated by the SAT.

Presented as part of the SAT Contamine exchange program. A collaboration between the Society for Arts and Technology [SAT] and the cultural service of Université Rennes 1, with support from Rennes Métropole, the Fonds franco-québécois pour la coopération décentralisée (FFQCD), the ministère des Relations internationales , of the Francophonie du Québec and of the city of Rennes, as part of Opportunités Digitales and the Maintenant festival.
