Close, Closer announces Début Award Jury!

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon Architecture Triennale

Foremost architects and theorists to pick rising star among fresh crop of talent.

Lisbon, Portugal, 09-05-2013 - The Lisbon Architecture Triennale is happy to announce the international jury of the Triennale Millennium BCP Début Award for architects under 35 years of age. The award is being launched this year as part of the programme of the 3rd edition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, Close, Closer, to open on 12 September.

In addition to applications from solo practitioners and studios, we are encouraging the audience at large to nominate their choices and turn a spotlight on who they see shaping tomorrow’s built environment. A list of eminent invited nominators will also submit a selection of candidates to the Jury. The goal is to cast a comprehensive gaze at the current architectural output with an eye to the directions it may take in the future, inviting diverse perspectives.

To judge the Début Award entries, we have brought together leading architects and curators whose work has made a decisive contribution to the way architecture is understood, analyzed and framed, not just as spatial practice but also as conceptual discourse. In the words of Close, Closer chief curator Beatrice Galilee “We are sure it will prove both a challenge and an inspiration to all Début Award applicants to bring their work to the attention of international leading figures whose trajectory and accomplishments have, in some cases, turned them into references for the applicants themselves”.

We are proud to have as members of the Début Award Jury:

Beatrice Galilee (UK), writer, critic, lecturer and chief-curator of Close, Closer
Eva Franch i Gilabert (ES), founder of OOAA and Director of Storefront for Art and Architecture
Ou Ning (CN), activist, curator, editor, artist and urban researcher
Tatiana Bilbao (MX), founder of studio Tatiana Bilbao S.C.
Diogo Seixas Lopes (PT), architect and professor, co-founder of Barbaslopes Arquitectos

THE TRIENNALE MILLENNIUM BCP DÉBUT AWARD

ABOUT THE AWARD
Around the world, emerging architects are furthering the discipline through innovative, experimental, thought-provoking work. The Lisbon Triennale Millennium BCP Début Award celebrates the achievements and encourages the career of these promising younger generations of architects, offering a prize of 5,000 euros. Solo practitioners and studios under 35 are eligible for the Début Award and can apply at www.close-closer.com. Architecture aficionados all over the world are welcome to nominate their practitioners of choice by sending an email with their name and website to debut@trienaldelisboa.com . A shortlist of candidates will also be proposed to the Jury by a list of invited nominators, composed of leading figures in the contemporary creative panorama.
The deadline for applications and nominations is 21 June 2013.

The winner will be announced in an official ceremony as part of the Close, Closer Opening Week calendar of events (12-15 Sep).

This is the first edition of the Début Award which, in conjunction with the Triennale Millennium BCP Universities Award Competition (announced last March 15) and the Lifetime Achievement Award (to be announced this September) signal the Triennale’s commitment to excellence at all stages of an architect’s career.

ABOUT CLOSE, CLOSER
The third Lisbon Architecture Triennale Close, Closer opens 12 September – 15 December 2013. Close, Closer will put forward an alternative reading of
contemporary spatial practice. For three months, chief curator Beatrice Galilee and curators Liam Young, Mariana Pestana and José Esparza will examine the multiple possibilities of architectural output through critical and experimental exhibitionsm, events, performances and debates across the city. During the Triennale, architecture will be portrayed as a living, social and artistic force, charting cultural, political,
scientific and aesthetic territories. By largely excluding built-form of architectura practice and focusing on alternatives the Triennale is responding to a shifting economic and social climate in which traditional modes of architectural productio are changing and where innovation is breeding fast.

ABOUT THE LISBON ARCHITECTURE TRIENNALE
The Lisbon Architecture Triennale is a non-profit association whose mission is to research, foster and promote architectural thinking and practice. It holds a major forum every three years for the debate, discussion and dissemination of architecture across geographic and disciplinary boundaries. In 2010, Let’s Talk About
Houses consolidated the Triennale’s presence in the circuit of events devoted to architecture with an estimated 154,000 attendees. Now, from its new headquarters in the Sinel de Cordes Palace, where a creative cluster will be established in the near future, the Triennale is organising a programme of Intervalo events while preparing for its third edition, Close, Closer. The Lisbon Architecture Triennale (2007 and 2010) was distinguished with the High Patronage of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic and in 2010, it was also awarded the status of Cultural Interest by the Ministry of Culture.
