Paredes, Portugal, 01-04-2014 -
The 2nd edition of Art on Chairs, international event of design and creativity in the furniture industry, has just kicked off with 2 calls for participation to the creative community: the International Design Competition (IDC) and the More Design, More Industry residencies programme. The common goal is to uncover innovative designs to integrate the industrial production of Paredes, a reference in the production of high-quality furniture located in the north of Portugal. The selected projects will also be presented in the scope of Art on Chairs, in a total of 4 countries and 5 cities, from September 2014 to April 2015.
Fostering design practice and experimentation in synch with the industrial fabric, along with the generation and sharing of original content, Art on Chairs consists of competitions, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, educational and cultural activities.
International Design Competition (IDC) and More Design, More Industry are the first advance of this year’s programme, which is taking place in Portugal, in Paredes and Lisbon, from November 2014 to March 2015, with showcase presentations in leading design events in Beijing (Sep ’14), Dubai (Oct’14) and Milan (Apr ’15).

International Design Competition (IDC)
– a Portuguese invitation
Curator: Vasco Branco, University of Aveiro, Portugal
Deadline for Applications: 21 April 2014
Open to: students and professionals of design and design-based disciplines, of all ages and nationalities.
The challenge: To think creatively on the concept of luxury and how it translates into objects, uses and ambiances in the contemporary everyday.
Proposals should fall within 4 typological categories (3 home furniture + 1 urban equipment).
Submissions: each submission must consist of 2 projects/designs for the same category.
Prizes: awarded to the top three winners in each of the four categories:
1st prize: EUR 12.000; 2nd prize: EUR 8.000; 3 rd prize: EUR 4.000

More Design, More Industry
Design Residencies in the Furniture Industry
Curator: Francisco Providência, University of Aveiro Portuga
Deadline for Applications: 7 April 2014
Open to: Portuguese and foreign designers, residing in Portugal
The challenge: We are looking for seven candidates to collaborate with
seven Portuguese guest authors and seven manufacturers in Paredes
in developing and prototyping new pieces destined to form a new brand
of luxury furniture.
Length and Conditions: 16-week residency in Paredes; with a residency
grant of EURO 2.800.
Guest authors: José Carvalho Araújo; Marco Sousa Santos; Pedro Sousa
Dias; Rui Alves; Rui Grazina, Rui Viana + 1 tbc

About Art on Chairs 3/3
Art on Chairs is an international event that promotes design and contemporary creativity as driving forces for innovation in industry and development across the board.
An initiative by the Municipality of Paredes, Portugal, that seeks to reposition the territory as a reference in the production of high-quality furniture, Art on Chairs brings together creation and production, culture and economy, local assets and global opportunities.
This translates into a programme of competitions, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, educational and cultural activities, in a dynamic of engagement that expands from the local context to achieve international reach.
Its successful first edition, which took place in Paredes in 2012, is a finalist of the 2014 RegioStars Awards for Europe’s most innovative and inspiring regional projects. The second edition is taking place in Portugal, in Paredes and Lisbon, from November 2014 to March 2015, with showcase presentations in Beijing (Sep’14), Dubai (Oct’14) and Milan (Apr’15).
Looking to engage widespread participation and input, Art on Chairs invites designers, creatives, economic agents, students and the audience at large to explore design as a driving force for innovation, regional development and enhancing industrial production and material culture.
