HKDC also announces the 168 winners of the Design for Asia Awards today. A presentation ceremony will take place on 3 December (Wednesday) to honour the design excellence.
“Hong Kong Design Centre organises the DFA Awards every year, aiming to inspire entrants and judges to consider and reflect on what kind of design Asia does need, as well as to commend these remarkable endeavours for their design excellence and give recognition to the people and projects that have had a significant impact in Asia. This year, the most outstanding winners have considered the fundamentals of design are to sense, understand and analyse people, culture, habits, and nature,” said Mr. Freeman Lau, Vice Chairman, Board of Directors, Hong Kong Design Centre.
DFA Lifetime Achievement Award (DFALAA) 2014
Mr. Kohei SUGIURA, Director, Research Institute of Asian Design, Kobe Design University
The Award signifies the design community’s respect for one of those rare individuals who have made major life-long contributions to the profession and society at large, especially in Asia. The Awardees must have worked with passion and integrity throughout their lives to score superior achievements in their chosen field of design. As a result, they have become acknowledged as ambassadors who educate and promote the wider use and appreciation of design in communities in Asia and beyond.
Currently as Director at the Research Institute of Asian Design, Kobe Design University, Mr. Kohei SUGIURA is a master of graphic design, typography and design research. After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in Architecture, Sugiura entered the graphic design world in the 1950s. From 1964 to 1967, he was Guest Professor at the Design College of Ulm in (formerly) West Germany and Professor of Visual Information and Design at Kobe Design University from 1989 to 2002.
Sugiura’s work crosses a wide spectrum within three fields – book and magazine design; research on Asian forms and intricate diagrams. Up till the 1960s, Japanese modern design had been heavily influenced by the Western grid system, therefore Sugiura’s designs were practically revolutionary. Original, complicated and in-depth, his designs may at first seem incomprehensible. Yet, when one really explores and immerses himself in Sugiura’s world, the irregular, miscellaneous, and unexpected become comfortable. His unusual and unexpected designs do not convey the scent of any sweat or the sense of anything anywhere near putrid. Presumably this is due to the unique characteristic that defines what is Japanese: the Sayakesa/ Sugasugashisa – cleanliness and purity, yet something quintessentially more.
His recent exhibitions include “Vibrant Books – Methods and Philosophy of Kohei Sugiura’s Design” at Musashino Art University Museum & Library (2011) and “Luminous Mandala: Book Designs of Kohei Sugiura” at Ginza Graphic Gallery (2011).
Previous DFALAA Awardees include the Late John HESKETT, Design Educator (2013); Henry STEINER , Cross-Cultural Design Pioneer (2012); and Kenji EKUAN, Chairman of GK Design Group (2011).

Design Leadership Award (DLA) 2014
Mr. HO Kwon Ping, Executive Chairman, Banyan Tree Holdings
The Award celebrates strong corporate leaders who have applied design to achieve exceptional business success. The Awardees must be a global business leader that has scored exceptional achievements and made major contributions to the integration of strong corporate leadership with superb design. By doing so, they will have established themselves as role models other members of the international business community can emulate, as well as an inspiration to all those who seek to shape a better future for humanity.
Mr. HO Kwon Ping, born in Hong Kong, is the Executive Chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings which is engaged in the development, ownership and operation of hotels, resorts, spas, residential homes, retail galleries and other lifestyle activities around the world. Banyan Tree was founded in 1984, and has emerged as one of Asia’s leading international brand names in the hospitality industry managing more than 35 resorts and hotels, 67 spas, 77 retail galleries and 3 championship golf courses across the globe. Banyan Tree’s success is measured not only by its geographical footprint into exotic locations, but also by its impact on community. As the majority of Banyan Tree’s hotels and resorts are located in developing countries, they have often been the chief vehicles for economic development in these communities. Other than ensuring responsible constructions, Banyan Tree uplifts local communities by hiring local talents, encouraging community tourism and supporting indigenous crafts with its retail arms.

World’s Outstanding Chinese Designer (WOCD) 2014
Mr. Arnold CHAN, Principal, Isometrix Lighting + Design Ltd.
The Award recognises the achievement of Chinese designers from across the globe. A Chinese designer with an exceptional track record for the quality and success of his or her work. The Awardee must have significant contribution to the design community. He or she should take the form of involvement in academic exploration or practical application, as well as participation in educational, training or research activities on either a national or an international level. The Awardee should have social consciousness and responsibility, and he or she should possess a humanitarian outlook that inspires him or her to create designs that have a positive impact on people’s lives and on the environment.
Mr. Arnold CHAN was born and raised in Hong Kong, and completed his further studies at the Architectural Association as well as the South Bank Polytechnic in London. He founded Isometrix Lighting + Design Ltd. in the UK in 1984, and subsequently opened a branch in Hong Kong. Having trained as an architect at the prominent British establishment Architectural Association, he has developed an innovative and versatile approach to lighting design that distinguishes his works from those of more traditional lighting engineers. By visualising the impact of light within a three-dimensional space, together with the help of an integrated mix of lighting effects that enhance the sense of spatial flow within the interiors, he maximises the full potential of lighting as a creative tool. Now, through the combination of advanced lighting technology and especially through the use of colour, the expressive and emotive impact of our environments can be realised and fine-tuned at a highly sophisticated level, ultimately giving each building a unique identity.
Chan has collaborated with many world-renowned architects and designers, all of which have their unique personal styles. One of his first high-profile lighting commissions in the mid-1980s was for the exclusive fashion retailer Joseph, whose Brompton Road store in London was designed by eminent architect Eva Jiricna. In Asia during the mid-1990s, Isometrix became a household name on account of working with Philippe Starck to illuminate the renowned Felix Restaurant at The Peninsula Hong Kong. Chan and his company, Isometrix, are not restrained by a brand’s style. Instead, they are committed to the best possible design, be it purely rational, simple, symbolic or dramatic. Isometrix utilises equipment at the forefront of lighting technology, working with the leading manufacturers in specific areas of expertise and designing or adapting equipment to the exact requirements of each particular project. His technical expertise and in-depth knowledge of the marketplace are beneficial to his clients thanks to the cost-effective solutions he proposes. His recent projects include Tazmania Ballroom and Upper House in Hong Kong, London Edition and Sketch in London, and AMQ in Tokyo.
Recent WOCD Awardees include YAO Yingjia, Vice President & Chief Designer of Lenovo (2013); Anthony LO, Vice President of Exterior Design, Renault (2012); Dato’ Jimmy Y K CHOO OBE, Founder and Creative Director of Jimmy Choo Couture (2011); Eric CHAN, CEO of ECCO Design Inc.
