AZURE's 13th annual AZ Awards program is a landmark vintage. Drawing submissions from 53 countries, the 2023 edition celebrates more winners than ever, with a record-breaking 26 AZ Awards Winners – 8 of which are also People's Choice awardees – 16 People's Choice, and 41 Awards of Merit recipients.
This year’s winners represent the best in Canadian and international design, addressing urgent problems and embracing new possibilities in a wide range of contexts and disciplines. The remarkable jurors – Marie Christine Dorner, David Fortin, Thom Fougere, Alain Gilles, Meg Graham, Peter Mabeo, Jay Osgerby, Pascale Sablan, Lawrence Scarpa, and Jerry Van Eyck – selected winners in 24 categories, including two draws — in the A+ Student Award and Buildings Over 1,000 SqM — which reflect this year’s exceptional calibre of talent.
On Friday, June 23, for the first time since 2019, and after 3 years of online celebrations, AZURE was able to fête the winners and finalists in person again at a spectacular gala at Toronto’s Evergreen Brick Works, together with the architecture and design community and Guest of Honour, architect Craig Dykers of Snøhetta. Winners and finalists travelled to Toronto from as far away as the Netherlands, Spain, and Brazil to join the festivities.
Jury winners received a stunning trophy designed by AZ Awards juror Marie Christine Dorner. The Earth-like orb is made from different layers of wood, including oak, sycamore, and walnut, assembled at various thicknesses and in random order so that no two sculptures are alike.
Inspired by Toronto's skyline, visible from the Evergreen lookout path, the George Brown School of Design created a luminous installation made of more than one hundred sonotubes, lit from within and capped with disks of fluorescent green, referencing the lush green space surrounding the Brick Works. They transformed the space and created the perfect ambience for a fantastic event.
