The era of the single ceiling fixture light, otherwise known as the "big light", is (thankfully) dimming. Once the default source of illumination in the home, the "big light" is giving way to a more thoughtful approach centered on layered, ambient light that actually makes you feel at home. While bright overhead lighting still has its place, it has become something of an internet punchline, reserved for cleaning the house, searching for a missing phone charger, or other tasks best completed as quickly as possible. Instead, designers and homeowners are embracing smaller table lamps that create warmth, depth, and atmosphere.

Responding to this evolution in residential design, Faro Barcelona introduces Shan, a sculptural table lamp by designer Pepe Llaudet that embodies the growing appreciation for ambient lighting. Composed of three handmade parchment shades crafted by local artisans, Shan takes its name from the Japanese word for "three." Inspired by Llaudet's longstanding fascination with Japanese culture and his travels throughout Japan, the design translates principles of simplicity, proportion, and visual harmony into a sculptural form that feels both distinctive and visually light.

"I have always been interested in the relationship between light and the way we experience a space. With Shan, I wanted to explore that relationship through simplicity, using three parchment shades to soften the light and create a feeling of balance and calm. The influence of Japanese architecture is present in the proportions, the materials and the restraint of the design, but ultimately Shan is about creating an atmosphere that feels natural, warm and quietly inviting," says Llaudet.

Parchment was selected specifically for the quality of light it creates, filtering illumination into a soft, enveloping glow without glare. At night, the effect becomes almost cloud-like, warm and atmospheric rather than bright or intrusive. Achieving that simplicity required significant technical development. The team worked to conceal the light source while maintaining an even, diffused glow, refine the proportions and stability of the large-format design, and adapt the handcrafted parchment to its scale. The result balances sculptural presence with the delicacy and restraint central to Shan's design.

Ambient lighting succeeds not by demanding attention, but by transforming the experience of a space. Rather than flooding a room with uniform brightness, Shan adds depth and creates a visual rhythm that feels calm and unhurried. As designers move away from relying on a single overhead source, lighting is increasingly used to shape atmosphere, creating interiors that invite people to slow down, unwind, and connect with their surroundings. As the conversation around the "big light" continues to reflect a broader desire for calmer, more restorative interiors, lighting has become about far more than visibility alone.

With Shan, Faro Barcelona demonstrates that thoughtful design extends beyond what we see, influencing how we feel, unwind, and live within our homes. Rooted in craftsmanship and inspired by the quiet principles of Japanese Zen design, Shan offers a timeless reminder that sometimes the most meaningful light is the one that softly fades into the background.
