100% Design, the UK’s largest design trade show, today announces its talks programme, which is curated by the Design Museum. Presented in a specially-commissioned auditorium, sponsored by LG Display and designed by Miska Miller-Lovegrove, the show will be opened by Architect Asif Khan, recently selected alongside Stanton Williams to design the new Museum of London.
Focussing on quality and depth, the talks present agenda setting keynotes from thought leaders in the industry including Ron Arad, Assemble co-founder Paloma Strelitz and Afroditi Krassa, as well as panel discussions exploring trends in contemporary practice and the future of design.
A look ahead to Design Museum
There is a unique opportunity to engage with the Design Museum’s programme ahead of its opening in Kensington on 24 November. ‘Designer, Maker, User’ presents the three distinct yet overlapping roles which create every product in the world as explored in the Design Museum’s new permanent collection. The design team behind the new Design Museum, Jan Hobel of John Pawson Architects and Allies and Morrison’s Simon Fraser share their experiences designing a new cultural institution for the twenty first century. London Design Guide Founder and Editor Max Fraser introduces a selection of nominees for the Design Museum’s annual ’Designs of the Year’ exhibition and awards.
Research partners WGSN, The Future Laboratory and Steelcase present and discuss the findings at daily trend reports, focussing on interior, retail and office design respectively. Steelcase’s research focuses on different ways companies can create workplaces to inspire employees and facilitate better engagement, with OnOffice Editor Helen Parton discussing alongside Rebecca Ruggles of Airbnb. WGSN highlights key colour and texture trends for Spring/Summer 2018, while The Future Laboratory delves into retail innovations ranging from the role of big data customer feedback to the rise of a new sustainability-inspired aesthetic for fashion retailers.
The programme brings together thought leaders to look at design futures. Mikael Ydholm of Ikea, Shumi Bose, curator of the British Pavilion at the current Venice Architecture Biennale, and Justin McGuirk, Design Museum Chief Curator, predict what the homes of the future might look like, and discuss the wider societal implications of the changing domestic landscape. Meanwhile players in everything from heritage to transport are creating entirely new consumer experiences, including Martijn van der Heijden, digital strategist at Fabrique and Tom Hares, CEO and Founder of Buzzbike, who discuss new customer models, social networks, the future of VR and some of the other innovations that will be changing your life in the not-too-distant future.
Design for change
Jeremy Myerson explores the role of design in social, demographic and technological change in ‘Putting human experience at the centre of design’. Also interested in the capacity of design to transform our experiences is ‘The new office experience’; this panel discussion with Daniel Gava, Director of Arper UK Ltd, Mark Catchlove, Director of Herman Miller’s Knowledge and Insight Group and Tom Lloyd of PearsonLloyd, and chaired by Oli Stratford, Editor of Disegno, explores how designers are responding to the demand for more flexible, smarter working experiences through innovations such as co-working spaces, digital nomads and hot-desking.
Brexit and design
Confronting one of the biggest issues facing the industry at this year’s London Design Festival, ‘Design and Brexit’ looks at the implications of the UK’s departure from the European Union for a historically international and outward looking industry. Ben Evans, Director of the London Design Festival, Louise Jury of the Creative Industries Federation and Marcus Fairs, Founder and Editor in chief of Dezeen join a panel that asks what can we expect, how can the European design community protect its culture, and how can we provide leadership and hope?
100% Design’s unique experience has London at its heart, a megacity, a global capital for culture and commerce, and a home to millions of people. A panel discussion including Ben Rogers, Director of the Centre for London and Peter Murray, Chairman of New London Architecture looks at how designers contribute to a city that is both liveable and lovable. And as London’s areas develop and change their cultural identity, Futurecity, Argent and the Design Museum discuss the ways in which design can help foster a sense of place. To mark late opening on Thursday night, a special 100% Design PechaKucha brings together Gravity Road, Beautiful Meme, Phillips’ Damien Whitmore and Special Projects for fast-paced, fun presentations.
Saturday 24 September is Consumer Day, when 100% Design welcomes the public for its final day. Daniel Hopwood, past President of the British Institute of Interior Designers and presenter of BBC TV’s Great Interior Design Challenge; Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead aka 2 Lovely Gays; and Meriel Scott, Director of Precious McBane, present ‘Interior Design Masterclass’, with top tips on how to combine beauty and practicality in the home. There is also a discussion presented by Kukka Founder Rona Meychus Koblenz examining the unique experience of designing from or in the Middle East and how the region’s craft, heritage, daily life and political and industrial reality influences the work and lives of its designers.
A separate programme will be hosted in the Forum, sponsored by RIBA Appointments, focusing on professional development.
