WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Projects Category: German Gymnasium by Into Lighting Limited (London, United Kingdom) The brief was to design a theatrical and layered lighting scheme, which create an intimacy and warmth, in such a cavernous venue. Highlight the magnificent architecture of the space and integrate light where possible to highlight the plush and sleek finishes of the various materials used for the interior design. As with any Grade II listed building attention had to be paid to mounting positions and cable routing for light fixtures.‘A beautifully designed scheme; restrained and refrained. They have certainly worked very hard to keep all the lighting to below eye-level, which helps retain a level of intimacy in such a large volume. They’ve done just enough architectural lighting to counterbalance the localized table lighting. It feels intimate, it feels convivial, and yet it doesn’t feel overpowering. They have achieved just the right amount of intimacy whilst still celebrating the volume of the space.’ PN

WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Projects Category: Corrs Chambers Westgarth by Electrolight (Melbourne, Australia) Leading law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth’s new Melbourne office is located over five floors from levels 22-26 in the innovative and unique centerpiece building at 567 Collins Street. Corrs’ reception is situated on the 25th floor, with spectacular views over Melbourne’s skyline from the floor to ceiling glazing. The feature staircase rises through the central void, linking reception with classic but contemporary mixed-use casual dining areas. Electrolight were appointed to provide a lighting scheme to realise Corrs’ vision of a sophisticated and timeless aesthetic, with a focus on the reception void and casual entertaining areas. Adding to this the primary consultation spaces, including fifteen meeting and boardrooms, unite Corrs’ interface and consultation offering. ‘I think this a beautifully executed scheme which combines tonality, contrast and drama and brings that all into a corporate environment which can often be quite staid. I think they have clearly captured the essence of the brand as well. All in all a really impressive piece of lighting design, and very well photographed too.’ PN

WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Projects Category: PHILIPS Lighting Headquarters by LAVA (Laboratory for Visionary Architecture) (Eindhoven, Netherlands) Golden light shines through a canopy of leaves to create a unique gathering space in the atrium of the new Philips Lighting headquarters in Eindhoven. Intelligent lights in the parametric designed ‘tree’ generate different scenarios, boosting communication, interchange and wellbeing for staff and visitors. LAVA, with partners INBO and JHK, completed in 2016 the 10700 sqm refurbishment of the mid 20th century building for the new headquarters. The atrium, originally the central courtyard of the 1950s building, was designed as a place of welcome, way finding, branding and staff interaction, a spatially strong space embracing the innovative, people-centric values of Philips. ‘I’m a great lover of light boxes, just because of the homogenous and ambient quality of light. It’s a clever project because they have utilised natural light in the space, which appears to work extremely well also from a design prospective.’ DA

WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Projects Category: Guinness Storehouse by Michael Grubb Studio (Dublin, Ireland) Michael Grubb Studio work on the Guinness Storehouse, Dublin, shows how lighting design can be used to reinforce and enhance a brand, tell stories and enhance architecture. It reflects a creative approach to the brief that goes wider than technical solutions and therefore delivers greater value and impact than a purely architectural lighting design solution. Given the nature of the product, celebrating darkness has been central to describing the brand. ‘This a nicely executed design with great use of colour. I love the shots of the internally illuminated clocks and the drama of the lighting within the space. It’s a clever scheme and I think Michael Grubb Studio have translated it very well.’ DA

WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Projects Category: Selfridges Body Studio by Nulty+ (London, United Kingdom) Nulty completed work in May 2016 on the lighting scheme for the new 37,000sq ft retail space, the Body Studio in Selfridges, a new retail concept completely dedicated to women’s body wear such as hosiery, loungewear, sleepwear and lingerie. Working closely with the team at Selfridges and the interior architects Neri & Hu, Nulty created the iconic department store’s first all LED scheme, that truly complements the luxurious, feminine and uncluttered aesthetic of the interior design. ‘We love the element of playfulness and almost Japanese-like design of the soft illumination. There’s a very strong integration between the interior and lighting design. A very accomplished project.’ DA/FA

WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Projects Category: 888 Collins Street by Ramus (Melbourne, Australia) 888 Collins is a prestigious residential development occupying the wedge where Bourke and Collins Street meet in Melbourne. The façade is flanked by soaring vertical fins, which form the focus of Ramus’ lighting design. The client brief was to articulate the architecture with light and, through that, to develop an artistic approach to the lighting design that could meet the City of Melbourne’s Public Art guidelines. In response to this we emphasized the rhythm and height created by fins on the façade by fitting each fin with custom LED fixtures. These fixtures were designed specifically to integrate seamlessly into the architecture and achieve the desired level of diffused glow. The result was a luminous skin, wrapping the façade in towering lines of light. ‘It’s the consideration of the technical execution that makes it stand head and shoulders about many of the other projects.’ PN ‘It’s not just another media façade; the control system that allows weather to determine the intensity and colour of the lights appealed to all the jury.’ DA

HIGHLY COMMENDED - WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Projects Category: Shoal743, Fishmongers' Hall by Scabetti (London, United Kingdom) The Worshipful Company of Fishmongers is among the most ancient. In the early 14th Century, the Court of Aldermen placed the Company among the Great Twelve, a position held to this day. In 2014 the Company’s committee continued their long history of supporting artistic talent by commissioning a new light sculpture from the Staffordshire based art studio of Scabetti, founded by husband and wife duo Dominic and Frances Bromley. Shoal743 now graces the entrance foyer of the historic Hall situated on the North East side of London Bridge and creates a harmonious marriage of old and new. The golden swirl of the Shoal pays homage to the gilded interior details of the hall and its framed artifacts including the portrait of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, painted by Pietro Annigoni. ‘The jury all agreed that Shoal743 was quite outstanding as an art piece or installation rather than an actual lighting project. However, it’s very striking in its design and construction, which is why we have awarded this project Highly Commended.’ OJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Projects Category: Gasholder No 8, King's Cross by Speirs + Major (London, United Kingdom) Located in the northern residential quarter of the King’s Cross redevelopment, Gasholder No 8 is a magnificent heritage structure that has undergone a major offsite restoration. Completed in November 2015, the structure has been repurposed as the frame for a family-oriented public pocket park and event space designed by Bell Phillips Architects. The 1590 sq. m project incorporates a new mirror polished stainless steel canopy and a landscaped lawn. As appointed lighting designers, Speirs + Major were engaged to ensure that the new ‘Gasholder Park’ would be as attractive and feel as safe and secure by night as by day. The lighting scheme is designed to make the most of the uniquely juxtaposing materiality and forms. Inspired by the unique circular layout, Speirs + Major conceived of creating a beautiful nighttime landmark and an enlivening immersive experience, based on the idea of a solar eclipse. ‘There is a very clear aesthetic choice combined with a very strong idea which is the play of light with a very dark material. The subtle line of contour gives the shape of the gasholder almost a silhouette. It is an elegant choice and an elegant design with a sculptural quality.’ FA

WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Projects Category: Berry Bros - Sussex Cellar by Sutton Vane Associates (London, United Kingdom) The Sussex Cellar is an amazing new space designed by MJP Architects for Berry Bros & Rudd, the oldest wine merchants in the country. The amazing design by the architects has a tiled, curving vaulted ceiling over a double height space all of which is underground. A real cellar with no daylight. The lighting has to be flexible. It has to be suitable for the famous Wine School and for dining and events of all kinds. The Wine School needs higher levels of illumination to see the colours of wines. Dining needs lower levels of intimate light and for AV presentations the screens must not be lit. ‘The details are particularly nice in the scheme. Technically trying to illuminate a cellar space without the ability to recess or fix lighting can be a challenge, so they have used fiber optics in a discreet way to create a well-lit space.’ OJ

Their goal is to reduce global CO2 -emissions and create a sustainable, eventful, healthy, socially and economically inclusive society. ‘There is clearly an authentic and deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and environmental design. Sustainable projects can look quite staid, however in this instance there is an innovative application of materials and invention in the details. There is a real warmth to the work, and a sense of tactility and domesticity which can be quite hard to achieve when you are working with raw material. However, they have achieved this in a way that is surprising, startling and wholly appealing.’ HH

WIN Awards 2016 - Emerging Interior Practice of the Year Category: Only If Architecture PLLC (New York, United States of America) Only If is a New York City- based design practice for architecture and urbanism founded in 2013 and is led by Adam Snow Frampton, AIA, who previously worked as an Associate at OMA in the Netherlands and Hong Kong, and is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University GSAPP. The practice currently consists of 6 architects and designers engaged in a range of work from interiors to housing, larger-scale urban design, research and speculation.'With the Voyager Expresso project as an example of a barista-focused coffee establishment, Only If has taken the programme of preparing the coffee and sitting to enjoy the coffee and then going on to create a special connection to enjoy the two, which is definitely challenging. Only If have achieved this beautifully however, without resorting to the usual clichés – I don’t see any metro tiles or bare light bulbs. Instead, the context and the materials seem to come through in a very innovative and specific way.' JJ
