WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Products Category: Fliegenbein SL Standing Lamp by J.T. Kalmar GmbH (Vienna, Austria)Kalmar Werkstätten's FLIEGENBEIN SL Standing Lamp – has a classic, industrial, humorous appeal and an organic and yet luxurious feel that blends in effortlessly with modern living environments. The Fliegenbein SL Standing Lamp is the third addition to the Fliegenbein family of four, expanding the character and functional applications of the range also consisting of table, floor and pendant versions. Fliegenbein gets its name from its base, which resembles the legs of a housefly. The standing lamp, designed by Kalmar Werkstätten’s creative director Garth Roberts, was launched by the Vienna based brand in January 2015 and translates Julius Theodor Kalmar’s 1957 floor lamp of the same name for a modern environment. ‘The detailing is very nice, in particular the cable management out of one of its legs. I would certainly put this into an interior project. It has different metal finishes; Brown, Dark Grey and light Grey, which is good. The silk lampshade would give a nice diffused quality of light. It’s a great product.’ DA

WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Products Category: KROP by CGM design LLC (New York City, United States)Krop Technology is a research laboratory and manufacturer of luminaries based on advanced optics and electronics for the purpose of controlling illuminance. Revolutionary concepts are utilized that supersedes conventional symmetric solutions and points to a forward direction for lighting expertise.Krop luminaries are particularly well suited for museums, galleries and exhibitions where the object needs to have the illumination cropped closely and evenly. ‘This is a very clever idea; a product that can frame a painting or graphic on display where the object needs to have the illumination cropped closely. Its design is quite strong and solves, quite beautifully, a specific design challenge. I’d be interested to see it in the flesh!’ FA

WIN Awards 2016 - Lighting Products Category: Neutron Pendant by Timothy Oulton (London, United Kingdom)Designed in-house as part of Timothy Oulton’s 2016 Collection, the Neutron pendant was launched in January 2016. Pushing the boundaries of design, the pendant is inspired by the transfer of energy. Like a supernova captured mid-explosion and then frozen in time, the Neutron radiates a powerful yet serene energy for elegant spaces.  The main light source comes from the glowing nucleus, which holds the light bulb. The light travels unseen to the ends of each of the 250 polished glass rods, so that only the tips light up, like newly formed stars floating in the cosmos. The effect is a very ambient, soft glow, perfect for people who like to entertain at home, and are looking for a dramatic conversation piece for their interior. ‘I like the handmade quality of this and also the glass tubes that radiates the light through points within it rather than being a flat form. It’s interesting and creative in terms of its lit affect, and I think it could be quite a recognizable pendant as a product.’ OJ
