WIN Awards 2016 - Hotels Category: The Old Clare Hotel by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer (Australia)The hotel was designed around the inspirational Unlisted Collection brief that was not too specific and with the capacity to evolve. An important part of the brief was to produce something that Sydney didn’t have, appealing to customers with a sense of adventure, people who seek out originality to their comfort, fabulous food, unusual views. This lead to a series of restaurants, roof top swimming pool and plenty of variety in the 62 rooms and suites.‘The Old Clare Hotel is designed with taste and style; it appears to boast a perfect balance of contemporary chic with honest, historical charm. We loved the re-use of the existing materials wherever it was possible to do so and the balance of vintage joinery with clean stylish light fittings and equipment gives a homely charm, but provides all of the comforts of the modern world.’ CN

Interior designer The Gallery HBA translated the inspiring surrounds into a journey of discovery, with each area revealing interpretations of the natural world through features, materials and patinas that convey the spirit of adventure and inspire memories.‘As one of the most beautiful places in Botswana, this fantastic getaway has an architecture that melds respectfully into its surroundings. Thoughtful, warm and graced by beautiful details in carefully selected materials, Belmond Eagle Island Lodge is a place to truly experience. Traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design are combined to produce an atmosphere that is beyond the expected as well as sustainable.’ LG‘One of my favourite projects as it is a luxury hotel within the atmosphere of a scientist camp with tents in the pure nature of Africa. Details seem to be basic and from former times, but they are modern luxury. Not too shiny, very sympathetic design.’ PJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Hotels Category: The Hoxton Amsterdam by Nicemakers (Netherlands)The Hoxton is a young and innovative small hotel group from London. The formula is simple: local and high quality design, good food and a lively atmosphere at affordable prices. With each new project a local team is appointed to ensure that the local city character is captured. To make sure the project is given the right energy and that the right balance between public spaces and hotel rooms is achieved, the interior designers were involved at an early stage. Without a standard set of requirements, the designers had creative freedom, with the only objective to ensure a homely feeling throughout. This maintained the essence of The Hoxton identity while offering a true taste of local culture.‘An adaptive re-use, sympathetically and innovatively designed by the team at Nicemakers. Created by connecting five 17th century canal houses, the design team showed great talent in blending the historic elements of building and a measurable sense of place and flair in modernising the interior design. The event and meeting space, whilst unpretentious, is truly inspired...this hotel will further increase the growing Hoxton fan base and is a worthy inclusion on the Hotels shortlist.’ JT
