Montreal, Canada, 2023-09-26 -

The Centre de design of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) presents Industrial Craftsmanship, a look at the current Canadian production of objects. The exhibition offers a sampling of twenty-eight objects, each representing an emerging practice in Canadian manufacturing.

The selected objects address a variety of concepts, including found geometries, industrial poetry, digital form, counterculture, the circular economy, causality and formability. Their common denominator is the revelation of inherent qualities of materiality in pragmatic combination with the tool. The object’s form expresses its manufacture.

Industrial Craftsmanship

At first glance, the expression “industrial craftsmanship” seems to be an oxymoron, juxtaposing two traditionally opposing concepts: the unique work of the craftsman vs. the serial production optimized by industry. However, the term provides an apt characterization of the reality of the material ecosystem and skill to which industrial designers have access. As an anthropological witness, the materialized object crystallizes a society’s set of values, needs and shaping technologies at a precise moment in its history. The object is like a Polaroid, an instantaneous portrait of the context from which it emerged.

Assembled in the UQAM Centre de design space, the twenty-eight objects embody the culture of manufacturing. For the most part, each object is a prototype or is from a small series where the designer was directly involved in its implementation. Juxtaposed with a collection of portraits of tools by photographer Arseni Khamzin, the objects assume the codes of a manufacturing workshop within the exhibition space.

The Industrial Craftsmanship exhibition was developed by curator and UQAM École de design object design professor, Guillaume Sasseville.

The objects are by twenty-eight designers: Anony, Apparatus Atelier, Atelier Zébulon Perron, barbeau desrosiers, willchoui, Tom Chung, Claste, Cyrc, Foraine, Thom Fougere, Lauren Goodman, Julian Gregory, Clara Jorisch, Calen Knauf, Lambert & fils, Élyse Leclerc, m3béton, Zoë Mowat, Greg Papove, Lambert Rainville and Nicolas Sangaré, David Raymond & Gabriel Thibodeau, Olivier Raymond and Jérémie St-Onge, Ricostudio, Guillaume Sasseville, Studio d’Armes, Sandy Lamb, Sarah Yao-Rishea and Jamie Wolfond.

The graphic signature of the exhibition was created by Matthias Kreutzer of

Our Polite Society studio.

About UQAM Design Center

The UQAM Design Center is one of the only venues in Canada to present exhibitions that illustrate historical and current trends in the fields of graphic, industrial, and urban design, as well as in architecture and fashion.

Founded in 1981 on the initiative of professors from the UQAM School of Design, the Design Center has produced about 350 exhibitions, aimed at design professionals, students, and the general public. It has thus contributed for the past 40 years to the development of a design culture and to its local and international influence through the prestigious exhibitions that it hosts, as well as through the creation of numerous travelling exhibitions, presented in more than ten of countries, mainly dedicated to the recognition of Quebec design.
