Bicycles Quilicot, by DKA, Finalist in the Architecture+Branding Category of the 2024 Architizer A+Awards
DKA
Catering to the needs of cycling enthusiasts, the new state-of-the-art distribution center, designed by DKA, is meticulously crafted to seamlessly integrate functionality and aesthetics.
With its combination of a distribution center, boutique, and head office, the building was strategically designed to intuitively guide diverse users to their destinations with ease. To direct consumers to the store, the main façade of the building is relatively opaque, creating a striking contrast with the transparent storefront. This design choice not only aids in navigation, but also addresses functional requirements. Given the lot's shape, part of the storage area faces the street, and minimizing fenestration in this area enhances safety while maintaining the building's overall intelligibility.
The thoughtful assembly, placement, size, and form of the building work in harmony to welcome, protect, and support activities on the site. This synergy among program elements enhances the user experience and improves functional efficiency.
Creating an exhibition-like atmosphere
The boutique design emphasizes flexibility and adaptability, integrating the latest digital technologies. It offers the variety of a department store, while preserving the charm of a neighborhood bike shop. A standout feature is the bike-wall, which showcases 42 bicycles highlighted by backlighting, creating an exhibition-like atmosphere. The unique grid lighting system was custom-designed to illuminate both the bicycles and the shop effectively.
Custom woodwork meets the client's needs for modular displays and functional storage. The materials - blond wood and black pre-painted perforated steel - reflect the brand's accessible character. Predominantly black interiors create a calming environment that accentuates the displayed products. The simplicity of the orange-colored signage is a nod to Quilicot's branding.
Bicycles Quilicot's new distribution center is more than just a facility; it's a carefully crafted space that embodies the brand's commitment to quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction.
The Architizer A+Awards
