One country acting alone cannot improve people’s lives around the world. Through the eyes of over 100 of the most influential international art directors, graphic designers and other creative individuals, a vibrant gallery display and silent auction of design creations, entitled “CommUNITY”, aims to highlight the importance of working together to address pressing world issues. Designers’ personal impressions of “CommUNITY” are expressed through a range of products and creative materials, on display and purchase at Pier 27, San Francisco, from June 20-21, 2019, as well as a website featuring the submissions: communitysfdw.com (from May 28, 2019). CommUNITY is an initiative orchestrated by acclaimed design studio Mucho, in partnership with San Francisco Design Week (SFDW).
CommUNITY participants include representatives from all over the world, including:
The exhibition is designed by leading exhibition designer Mitchell Mauk, who will create a sleek display for over 100 artifacts. Among the silent auction items are a broad range of offerings, from textiles and ceramics, to apparel and printed posters, including a cotton flag by design studio Garbett in Australia, glazed ceramic teacups by design studio Supple Studio in the UK, an embroidered denim jacket by architecture firm Jasmax in New Zealand, a limited edition surfboard by David Carson in the US and numerous printed posters.
“We’re excited to orchestrate ‘CommUNITY’ to help raise awareness that we can all play a small part in contributing towards a common goal by working and collaborating together,” says Mucho Partner Rob Duncan. “We can’t change the world with broad brush strokes, in isolation. Working with our friends and neighbors is key.”
“CommUNITY lies at the heart of San Francisco Design Week,” says SFDW Executive Director Dawn Zidonis. “Raising awareness of global issues is an important initiative to which supporters can contribute in a modest way towards a greater cause. We’re honored to have received a tremendous response from acclaimed designers in the international design community.”
“CommUNITY” is a public event benefiting San Francisco Design Week. The artifacts and posters on display will be available for purchase in a silent auction at the SFDW Opening Night Gala on June 20 at Pier 27, San Francisco. Bids can be received online from all over the world at this website as of June 7th: community.sfdw.com including bids during Opening Night. To view all submissions, the link may be viewed from May 28, 2019.
Founded in 2002, Mucho comprises six partners and two associate partners working with teams across five worldwide offices: San Francisco, New York, Barcelona, Paris and Sydney. About SF Design Week
The Future Started Here
Launched in 2006, San Francisco Design Week (SFDW) is an essential week-long regional festival that showcases the unique intersection of ideas, design, business & entrepreneurism that makes the Bay Area the birthplace of the future.
Now a global phenomenon, San Francisco’s international success is born from historically free-spirited entrepreneurialism, coupled with the imaginative vision of contemporary design and state-of-the-art technology. Pioneers of new ways of looking at the world, nimble Bay Area start-ups are now among the world’s most influential design-led companies, producing products, services and experiences that profoundly influence the daily lives of billions of people globally.
Through approximately 350 events, SFDW celebrates this spirit of newness by providing approximately 45,000 attendees unique access to exhibitions and conversations with the designers who are shaping the future — from architecture to fashion, product design to digital services, and everything in between.
San Francisco Design Week is a community event led by a team of advisors and a core committee which represents the diversity of design disciplines in the Bay Area. SFDW is organized by AIGA San Francisco, the professional association for design in partnership with IDSA, Center for Architecture + Design and AIA, SFFAMA, SEGD, SDN, IXDA, local consulates, design universities, neighborhood associations and museums.
