At the end of September 2024, Bright Little Things launched an innovative collection of flush-mounted components during GLUE-Amsterdam. This authentic collection reimagines conventional switches and sockets. The result is a fresh design with a touch of humor in a traditionally serious field.
The innovation lies in the design of the finishing components and the material, as well as in the compatibility with the in-wall mechanisms of renowned brands. The collection is crafted entirely from the sustainable material solid surface. The plate is a single cohesive piece, seamlessly integrating sockets and USB outlets, which is a new feature. The addition of small buttons and crosses add a new and playful touch, further contributing to a reinterpretation of switches and sockets.
Architects have embraced the BLT collection, evident not only from reactions during the launch, but also from the Frame Awards jury. On October 24, Bright Little Things was announced as the Frame Award 2024 winner in the Accessories category at the ceremony in Hong Kong.
Reinterpretation of switches and sockets
According to designer and architect Kitty van Riet, switches and sockets are often overlooked in interior design. Installers typically choose them based on convenience or habit. Yet these elements are everywhere in a building, often at eye level. Responding to client demand for eye-catching switches, Kitty redesigned these components. She saw a gap in the market: current options were limited to plastic, dull colors, or retro and classical styles. The BLT collection offers a refreshing alternative, standing out with its modern, minimalistic, and colorful approach.
Sustainability in a different approach
Bright Little Things distinguishes itself from conventional brands through its exclusive focus on finishing components. The BLT collection is compatible with the in-wall mechanisms of renowned brands such as Gira, Jung, and Merten. A single finishing component supports various functions. Including rotary dimming, switching, and pulse switching, while combining a range of button options. These finishing components attach securely with strong magnets. The design is also adaptable. A switch can later be replaced with a dimmer without changing the plate or buttons, ensuring sustainability. The plates are easy to install, but require precisely aligned in-wall mechanisms, as the components are rigid and cannot be bent. Once installed, they are easy to clean, reusable, and even dishwasher-safe. The material’s durability ensures it can be recycled or reused by a second owner.
A new way of processing solid surface
Solid surface, the material of choice for the BLT collection, is well-known in the furniture industry for sinks and countertops. It has a smooth surface and is pleasant to touch, and it visually resembles natural stone, while being as workable as wood. Beyond their standalone appeal, BLT components complement designs from other solid surface designers, enhancing their value. The buttons for switching and dimming feel comfortable to use, contributing to and improved overall experience.
Manufactured locally near Amsterdam, the plates and buttons are CNC-milled to a level of precision previously unattainable in the industry. The collection’s uniquely small, refined elements have set a new standard for CNC milling, achieved in collaboration with partner Databouw.
BLT unveils a reinterpretation of switches and sockets. The sleek plates, fully integrated sockets, small buttons, and fresh colors or natural stone patterns make the BLT collection truly unique and authentic. Using the in-wall mechanisms of renowned brands demonstrates a different approach to sustainability, as does the adaptability of the design: one can replace the in-wall mechanisms and still use the same finishing components. In the end, the spotlight shines on a new design of a well-known accessory.
