In the course of the economic reform China has experienced, good design has become increasingly important. That is evidenced both by numerous government initiatives and through the development of leading companies which successfully implement technological progress in a new product language. Mobile phone manufacturers such as Huawei, ZTE and Xiaomi, electronics company TCL, and the computer brand Lenovo, to name some of the big players, are representative of this development.
In the 1950s, when engineering advanced and the rise of a consumer culture in Western countries began to have a market effect on the quality and choice of goods, design competitions were established to offer consumers guidance in this profusion of products. Their aim was to publicise and raise awareness of the value of good design, regardless of country-specific circumstances. An example of such a competition is one of the most important design awards, the Red Dot Award, which traces its origins back to the “Industrieform” association that was established in the young Federal Republic of Germany in 1954 to select and promote the best “industrial forms”.
Today, the most populous country in the world is moving away from the image of "workbench of globalisation" and entering a new stage on the road to "Designed in China". The "China Good Design" distinction will be awarded for the first time at the "Xiamen International Design Business Week - Red Dot in China 2015" trade fair. This product competition is hosted by the Xiamen Culture Media Group and organised by Red Dot. Thus, “China Good Design” will be the first independent design award for the entire People's Republic, based on the strict statutes of the Red Dot Award. Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot, emphasised: “The time is right to establish an independent Chinese design competition that is set up in accordance with international standards.”
The registration phase for the competition is ongoing until 29 September. All submissions will be assessed by an international, independent expert jury. After a pre-selection by the jury, the nominated products will be judged and later displayed on site during the “Xiamen International Design Business Week - Red Dot in China 2015”. The fair will be held from 30 October until 2 November at the International Conference and Exhibition Center in Xiamen, China.
