A Book Focusing on “Seamless Architecture” Has Been Published

Wakefields, United Kingdom

Fujiki Studio + F.A.D.S

Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan, 2026-05-29 -

Seamless Architecture refers to a global architectural trend that has emerged since around the year 2000, for example, even limiting to the period up to 2015 when Professor Ryumei Fujiki compiled his research, Continuous Plate House by F.A.D.S (2001), Graz museum by Peter Cook (2003), Selfridges Birmingham by Future Systems (2003), Ordrupgaard Museum by Zaha Hadid Architects (2005), WaterCube by PTW Architects (2007), Teshima Museum by Ryue Nishizawa (2010), Artificial Topography by Fujiki Studio (2011), Ordos Museum by MAD (2011), Festival Hall Tyrol Erl by Delugan Meissl Architects (2012), The Blue Planet by 3XN (2013), Turbulences FRAC Center by Jakob + Macfarlane (2013), Philharmonic Hall by Barozzi/Veiga (2014), Kannikegården, which was awarded EUmies Awards 2017 by Lundgaard & Tranber Architects (2015), etc.

It refers to architecture in which the walls and roof (and floors, if possible) are covered with a single material, with the seams made as inconspicuous as possible - just as our bodies are covered with seamless skin made of a single material.

Therefore, we can say that this is 21st-century architecture modeled after "life-form", as opposed to 20th-century architecture modeled after "machines". Ryumei Fujiki has named this group of architecture "Seamless Architecture". It is no exaggeration to say that today, almost without exception, all conscious architects around the world design their own buildings as Seamless Architecture.

This book summarizes the activities undertaken since 2010 by the Fujiki Studio at Kogakuin University in Tokyo, and F.A.D.S, an architectural design firm co-founded by Ryumei Fujiki and Yukiko Sato. It is a sequel to their first book, “Aqua-scape: The Nature-oriented Architecture". It is published by Beam Gallery in the UK, just as the first book. In this book, they continue the concept of Nature-oriented Architecture while presenting the important concept of "Seamless Architecture".

This book, including its cover designed by Yukiko Sato, is beautifully crafted, presenting a new global trend in architecture—seamless architecture—while taking environmental issues into consideration, and featuring works that have won numerous international awards (including the highest awards). The cover, inspired by “Porous Manifold as a Japanese Tearoom” of their award-winning work, is created applying traditional Japanese ORIGAMI techniques.

The paperback of this book is currently available for purchase on Amazon Japan and others.
