At the heart of Luminaire Authentik is its commitment to innovation and artistry, and its latest artist residency program is a testament to this.
The Monumental Collection, crafted during an artist residency at Luminaire Authentik in collaboration with artist Zeynep Boyan, reflects the company’s dedication to merging custom lighting design with artistic ingenuity. It draws inspiration from the legacy of ancient civilizations and the rich cultural heritage of pre-modern Turkey. This collection pays homage to the enduring elegance and grandeur of classical architectural columns from a crossroads of diverse cultures, blending elements from Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Anatolian artifacts into a reimagined, modern lighting design.
Each fixture in the Monumental Collection showcases the enduring strength and beauty of classical forms, merging traditional aesthetics with contemporary craftsmanship. Central to each design is a hand-sculpted knob, a defining feature of Boyan’s work that enhances the organic quality of the collection’s forms. Sculpted entirely by hand from stoneware clay, each piece undergoes an oxidation firing process, is finished with hand-brushed glaze strokes, and is completed with Luminaire Authentik’s custom products, showcasing their artisanal approach.
This residency showcases Luminaire Authentik’s exceptional ability to merge traditional artistry with contemporary design, creating a seamless blend of functionality and timeless beauty. By pushing creative boundaries and celebrating craftsmanship and cultural narratives, the collaboration reinforces Luminaire Authentik’s position as a leader in handmade, custom lighting.
Together, Boyan and Luminaire Authentik’s artisans crafted a unique collection that pays tribute to classical architecture, while embodying the enduring elegance of artistry and design. This partnership highlights their shared commitment to honoring tradition with contemporary design.
The Monumental vernissage will take place on January 15, 2025. The exhibition will then be open to the public on January 16 and 17, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at 6909 Rue Marconi, Montreal, QC H2S 3K2.
About the annual artist residency
Luminaire Authentik has always offered a unique customization experience, enabling consumers, architects, and designers to create fully bespoke lighting fixtures. Since 2021, they have extended this approach to the local artistic community by sharing their expertise with artists in their own mediums. This annual artist residency celebrates local creativity and talent, while highlighting the union between art and design.
The next artistic residency will take place in 2025, and Luminaire Authentik will invite artists from Montreal and surrounding areas to apply for the fourth edition on its website. The selected artist will have full access to LA's fabrication workshop and material library. Collaborative meetings with the Luminaire Authentik team will be organized to foster a spirit of exchange and ensure the technical feasibility of the artistic project.
The residency will culminate in an exhibition showcasing an exclusive collection of lamps, giving the public and collectors the opportunity to purchase these unique works. Artists can apply by February 15, 2025 to be considered for the residency program.
About Zeynep Boyan
Zeynep Boyan is an artist and designer working with clay as her primary material. She creates abstract and biomorphic sculptures, furniture, and other functional objects. Through her work, she explores themes of identity, connection, and belonging by utilizing the interplay between objects, spaces, and materials. Her process blends centuries-old materials and techniques, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces crafted entirely by hand.
With a background in cinema, Boyan has lived in various cities such as Istanbul, Brussels, Montreal, and now Munich, all of which have profoundly influenced her understanding of belonging and identity and have shaped her material sensibility and body of work. Over the years, she has cultivated a deep interest in natural, historical, and architectural artifacts, exploring the interplay between the old and the new, as well as the transient aspects of a fast-paced world and centuries-old craftsmanship methods.
Since 2021, Boyan’s work has been showcased at Dubai Design Week, Dutch Design Week, London Design Festival, IDS Toronto, Souk Montréal, and NYC Design Week.
