Kastella is proud to announce the launch of the S304 Series, the first multipurpose bookcase by the Montreal-based manufacturer and distributor of premium wood furniture.
The S304 collection, designed by Kastella founder Jason Burhop, is a new, contemporary open storage solution available in solid walnut, cherry or white oak.
T hin metal panels, 1/8" thick, are arranged vertically at increasing intervals, creating a rhythmic visual interplay between lines and perspectives. The piece’s volume takes on a different appearance from every angle by playing on the viewer’s perception of filled and empty spaces. The dividers for the three base models are white, but a full range of colours is available with custom units. The S304 owes its balance and refinement to the juxtaposition of the firmness and stability of solid wood with the delicate lightness of lacquered metal.
Initial sketches for the bookcase collection emerged during the renovation of Kastella’s showroom on Saint-Laurent Boulevard. The original plans for the space included built-in furnishings, but the idea was abandoned because it lacked flexibility. Two years later, Burhop revived his concept as a standalone product that fits perfectly with his other collections.
Kastella’s philosophy is grounded in sustainable development principles. High-quality manufacturing and a timeless, minimalist style ensure that the firm’s collections boast exceptional physical and aesthetic durability. Rejecting the logic of consumerism, Kastella’s products are truly built to last.
In order to minimize the environmental impact of wood harvest and transportation, the company sources its
raw materials from FSC forests in nearby regions, specifically the American Northeast and Midwest as well as Canada. Consistent with that approach, all items are manufactured in Montreal. The company’s various suppliers (hardware, upholstery, finishing, etc.) are also local.
Kastella was founded by Jason Burhop, a man with a passion for excellent design and craftsmanship. He was strongly influenced by his father, whose European roots sparked Jason’s interest in refined furniture and helped him develop an affinity for well-designed objects. After earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, he decided to take a new path and follow his passion.
In 1999, Burhop took over a friend’s workshop, where he spent long hours honing his skills and creating his first collection. Quebec’s furniture industry was changing quickly at the time, with many companies going out of business or sending their production offshore. In 2001, as a self-taught furniture maker, Burhop seized an opportunity: not to produce his goods elsewhere, but to make his creations in Montreal. Two years later, Burhop opened a retail space with his first collection of solid-wood contemporary furniture.
Today, Kastella employs dedicated
craftspeople who share his passion for creating beautiful, functional and timeless furniture.
