WIN Awards 2016 - Hotels Category: Casa Ellul  by Chris Briffa Architects (Malta)In 2010, two brothers asked for ideas to develop their inheritance: a dilapidated townhouse passed across five generations, facing the most iconic Valletta church.  At the time, Valletta was an office-based rental market, when we suggested a boutique hotel, they were sceptical. With only a handful of lunch-based restaurants and a few rickety hotels in town, hospitality seemed risky. We proposed minimal alterations to the original structure to preserve the authenticity of the house, in contrast with contemporary spaces in the courtyard, bathrooms and rooftop additions. Each suite would be altogether different from the other, with guests feeling like they were staying in a Maltese home rather than a hotel – an experience reinforced by the scale of the property. ‘An intimate hotel with 8 suites only. Wonderfully integrated in an old building in Malta, with very cool, modern and architectural elements, but also using traditional tiles. Casa Ellul is light, bright and elegant, but still it is somehow cosy!’ PJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Hotels Category: Puro Hotel by OHLAB (Spain)Puro is an iconic 22 room boutique hotel located in the heart of La Lonja, in the historical center of Palma. Adapting itself to the different existing buildings, the hotel has an irregular configuration. The refurbishment project by OHLAB takes advantage of that complexity as a potential tool to generate unexpected and unique spaces where each room is different from each other. The project solves every room with individualized and unique layouts and solutions. The selection of natural and local materials emphasizing the Mediterranean essence has been very important.‘Small in scale, this is a contemporary design hotel within an 18th century palace in the old town of Palma de Mallorca. The team at OHLAB have managed to magnificently plan a rather difficult series of existing spaces with refreshing variety whilst pursuing design distinction in all aspects of the bespoke interior details. The resulting palette of natural material choices, soft neutral colours and innovative details is simplistic and effective in equal measure… a most deserved inclusion on the hotels shortlist.’ JT‘Pure, Poetic, Powerful….a great conversation reduced to the max, but not just cool architecture – simple interior details and great craftsmanship create a luxury hotel like a monastery!’ PJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Hotels Category: Senato Hotel by Alessandro bianchi architetto (Italy)Before restoration it was an early twentieth century palace intended for apartments and offices. The project was intended to transform it into a sober, elegant boutique hotel with a decidedly Milanese character. A hotel open to an international art loving heterogeneous clientele looking for a recognizable and welcoming place.‘At Senato Hotel, guests step into an elegant setting with an art nouveau history beautifully married to a contemporary refined minimalism. The elegant design details stream consistently throughout the project while the golden gingko leaf prevails as a hotel symbol.’ LG

WIN Awards 2016 - Hotels Category: The Apple Hotel by *noa – network of architecture (Italy)It is all about the apple in the ‘Apfelhotel Torgglerhof’ in Saltaus in the Passiria Valley in Northern Italy. The agricultural farm and the hotel extend on 3 buildings and form the farm ensemble – surrounded by numerous apple trees and nature. For noa* network of architecture the starting point and key element of the design was the circle of the apple throughout the year: bloom, harvest, refinement and repose period.‘The Apple Hotel dared to be different – and it’s charming. The muted palette of textures and tones relates strongly to the sustainable and organic undertones. We loved the contemporary takes on traditional elements throughout the design and we came away feeling refreshed to see a departure from the rustic, industrial and mid-century vibes which have dominated the market for the last few years.’ CN

WIN Awards 2016 - Hotels Category: The Old Clare Hotel by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer (Australia)The hotel was designed around the inspirational Unlisted Collection brief that was not too specific and with the capacity to evolve. An important part of the brief was to produce something that Sydney didn’t have, appealing to customers with a sense of adventure, people who seek out originality to their comfort, fabulous food, unusual views. This lead to a series of restaurants, roof top swimming pool and plenty of variety in the 62 rooms and suites.‘The Old Clare Hotel is designed with taste and style; it appears to boast a perfect balance of contemporary chic with honest, historical charm. We loved the re-use of the existing materials wherever it was possible to do so and the balance of vintage joinery with clean stylish light fittings and equipment gives a homely charm, but provides all of the comforts of the modern world.’ CN

Thoughtful, warm and graced by beautiful details in carefully selected materials, Belmond Eagle Island Lodge is a place to truly experience. Traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design are combined to produce an atmosphere that is beyond the expected as well as sustainable.’ LG‘One of my favourite projects as it is a luxury hotel within the atmosphere of a scientist camp with tents in the pure nature of Africa. Details seem to be basic and from former times, but they are modern luxury. Not too shiny, very sympathetic design.’ PJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Hotels Category: The Hoxton Amsterdam by Nicemakers (Netherlands)The Hoxton is a young and innovative small hotel group from London. The formula is simple: local and high quality design, good food and a lively atmosphere at affordable prices. With each new project a local team is appointed to ensure that the local city character is captured. To make sure the project is given the right energy and that the right balance between public spaces and hotel rooms is achieved, the interior designers were involved at an early stage. Without a standard set of requirements, the designers had creative freedom, with the only objective to ensure a homely feeling throughout. This maintained the essence of The Hoxton identity while offering a true taste of local culture.‘An adaptive re-use, sympathetically and innovatively designed by the team at Nicemakers. Created by connecting five 17th century canal houses, the design team showed great talent in blending the historic elements of building and a measurable sense of place and flair in modernising the interior design. The event and meeting space, whilst unpretentious, is truly inspired...this hotel will further increase the growing Hoxton fan base and is a worthy inclusion on the Hotels shortlist.’ JT
