Saint-Laurent in motion
Bureau du design - Ville de Montréal
Design competition: Design and production of a video projection on the façade of église Saint-Laurent
The aim of this province-wide contest is to entrust the winning designer with a mandate for the design and production of a 15-minute video projection that will be screened on the façade of église Saint-Laurent every evening from mid-June to mid-September.
Presented in the Vieux-Saint-Laurent’s historical and heritage district, the video projection will delve into Saint-Laurent’s past in addition to illustrating the current mosaic of Saint-Laurent’s citizens and its multicultural cachet.
“Primarily originating from a religious community and from farming families that settled at the base of Mount Royal, today Saint-Laurent is an innovative community that is characterized by the soundness and diversity of its socio-economic fabric,” explained the Mayor of Saint-Laurent, Alan DeSousa. “Its progress has been constant, and the video projection will definitely give the public the desire to discover the history of Saint-Laurent from its founding right up until today. The “Saint-Laurent in motion” project reflects our administration’s willingness to increase our citizens’ awareness of the different components of our historical, cultural, natural and urban heritage. We are also making a shift towards interactive tourism by providing mobile applications that allow visitors to discover these venues on their own while actively touring on foot or bicycle”, he concluded.
"The talent of our artists will once again be spotlighted with a view to promoting our City’s many attractions. This competition makes it possible to explore new variations on the use of public spaces and to develop tourism expertise that will help Montréal shine as a UNESCO City of Design", explained Mrs. Élaine Ayotte, who is responsible for culture, heritage and design on the Ville de Montréal Executive Committee.
Creators are invited to submit an original concept that is striking from both aesthetic and graphic viewpoints. Through their design and content, the narrative soundtrack and universal appeal of the script should make it possible for citizens of all ages to identify with and increase the project’s outreach.
The budget allocated for the winner of the video projection design is fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000). The Borough will provide the necessary technical projection equipment.
MULTIDISCIPLINARY CONTEST
This competition, with its open and transversal approach, will involve two phases. It is intended for multidisciplinary teams in order to foster the emergence of new cultural and artistic practices.
Designers are also invited to form teams comprising members from all walks of life: designers working in multimedia, stage arts or cinema (set designers, screenwriters, music, light and video designers, etc.), architecture or design.
TO ENTER
The entry deadline for the first phase of the competition, by means of anonymous tender, is February 12, 2013 at noon. Registration is mandatory in order to obtain the documents required to prepare a proposal. Proposals must be submitted no later than noon on February 18, 2013. Participants are required to provide a sketch presenting the synthesized images of the video projection that will be screened onto the church façade. Competitors will not receive compensation for this step.
A jury will then select a maximum of three finalists who will each receive two thousand, five hundred dollars ($2500) conditional on the preparation of a 60-second video.
The jury is composed of the following members:
• Mouna Andraos, environmental designer, Dailytouslesjours,
• Félix Dagenais, coartistic director and designer, Atomic3,
• Paul Lanctôt, assistant to the Borough Director and Head of the Division des communications et des relations avec les citoyens, Borough of Saint-Laurent, Ville de Montréal,
• Pascal Lefebvre, program director, Partenariat du Quartier des spectacles,
• Geneviève Levasseur, content manager, Première Chaîne de Radio-Canada.
