CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL pop-up store from May 21 to 26, 2013
Bureau du design - Ville de Montréal
CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL: Three major events, three chances to shine for items made in Montréal, UNESCO City of Design
“These events will provide outstanding showcases for made-in- Montréal design expertise and enable our creators to find new outlets for their products. And members of the public will have a great opportunity to discover designer items that reflect the image of Montréal, UNESCO City of Design,” said Élaine Ayotte, Ville de Montréal Executive Committee member responsible for Culture, Heritage and Design.
For his part, Maka Kotto, Québec Minister of Culture and Communications, noted: “The Agreement on the Cultural Development of Montréal allows us to highlight our artists' talents even more strongly. The opening of the CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL store, offering unique and original pieces fashioned by some of our very best designers, means the public in Montréal and all across Québec, as well as visitors from abroad, can appreciate the creative force of our city.”
All of the designers were selected for the CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL catalogue following a call for proposals to Montréal designers and publishers. Examples are many and striking. Like the recycled furs that Harricana morphs into key holders. Or Raplaplas, irresistible dolls and other cloth playmates concocted by a “gal who sure knows how to use a needle and thread.” Or kilometres of pages made into notebooks by the firm Couple d’idées, gourmet sweets created by Dinette Nationale, magical vases from Toma Objets that take shape only when filled with water, and “Montréal tiles” by ceramist Pascale Girardin.
In short, visitors to the events can expect a wide-ranging, representative sampling of made-in-Montréal design.
The 27 talented creators whose work will be on view—and better still, on sale—are: À Hauteur d’homme – Adzif – Les Archivistes (publisher: Agence Monde Ruelle) – Anita – Aquaovo – Bluecony – C comme ÇA – Chic Moustache – Chocolats Geneviève Grandbois – Couple d’idées – Design ÔM – Dinette Nationale – Duel – Harricana – La Bourgeoise Sérigraphe – Otra – Panoplie – Pascale Girardin – Pattern recognitions – Raplapla – Schleeh Design – Kauffmann Design – Sébomari – String Theory – Toboggan Design – TOMA – Tourmaline MTL.
An event celebrating creativity; a store to match
C2-MTL, May 21 to 23 at L’Arsenal
C2-MTL is an immersive event that aims to reinvent the annual international convention concept so as to better explore the “commerce/creativity” dynamic and its potential for redefining the world of business.
Echoing that philosophy, the CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL pop-up store will also aim to revisit the customer experience, offering an “à la carte” formula whereby conference-goers can check off the items they want on a menu and pick them up, wrapped and ready to go, on their way out of a conference or cocktail party.
It’s an eminently creative way for visitors to head back home with a little bit of Montréal in their suitcases.
Three-wheeled retail, fuelled by design
25th Montréal International Design Show, May 23 to 26 at Place Bonaventure
The SIDIM is the city’s annual rendezvous for professionals from every industry related to design, architecture and construction, as well as for design-loving consumers.
For the occasion, CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL will be debuting an all-new, engaging concept to show off the products in its catalogue.
The makers of Fruixi, the pedal-powered cart that normally delivers a variety of locally produced fruits and vegetables to Montrealers, are partnering with the Bureau du design in support of Montréal creativity. Fully modified by its creator, Guillaume Darnajou, the three-wheeled vehicle will be out and about during the SIDIM, drawing visitors with a well-stocked display of items by CODE SOUVENIR–featured designers likely to provoke plenty of impulse buys.
An idea so nice, they’ve rolled it out twice!
Haut+Fort, May 23 to 26 at the UQÀM Design Centre CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL will be commandeering a second Fruixi vehicle at the event Haut+Fort, a design fair that seeks to bring together the public and designers and market avant-garde objects, furniture and other creations in an accessible, friendly setting.
Posted outside the fair, the tricycle will act as a showcase for a CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL counter located inside the exhibition hall, where a comprehensive selection of designer items will be on sale— all of them drawn, of course, from the CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL catalogue.
About CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL is an initiative of the Ville de Montréal’s Bureau du design, produced in partnership with the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, pursuant to the Agreement on the Cultural Development of Montréal. Its goal is to promote Montréal creativity to public- and private-sector institutional buyers through annual publication of a catalogue of gift items selected following a call for proposals to Montréal designer-producers and publishers.
About the Bureau du design
The Bureau du design de la Ville de Montréal was created in January 2006 by the Ville de Montréal. Its mission is to implement the municipal action plan aimed at improving design throughout the city and positioning Montréal as a UNESCO City of Design. Montréal is a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, as a City of Design. The Network, which comprises 34 cities in 18 countries (11 of which are recognized as Cities of Design), enables creative practitioners in member cities to share experiences, best practices and knowledge on an international scale.
