This winter, let playful lights dazzle you in the Quartier des Spectacles

Montreal, Canada, 2011-12-19 - Until February 26, 2012, Quartier des Spectacles invites you to extend your cultural outings in its public spaces, where you will find a series of interactive installations, collectively called Light Therapy. It’s an energizing experience that will show you winter’s inspiring side, through the magic of light.

The installations –Forêt Forêt and Éclats de verre – will be located in the area around the Saint-Laurent metro station and Place Émilie-Gamelin respectively. For added pleasure, UQAM-based talents have created an original series of projections for the university’s Place Pasteur bell tower. There are also new exterior video projections for the Grande Bibliothèque, UQAM’s Centre de design and Place de la Paix.

“We are very proud of this second edition of Light Therapy, featuring creations by exceptionally talented Montreal artists. Once again, Quartier des Spectacles is embracing Quebec’s northern spirit, extending the Quartier’s cultural excitement all winter long. Before a play or after a concert, come to the Quartier for some fantastic photons and a communal Light Therapy session,” said Pierre Fortin, executive director of the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership.

“Urban design is the reflection of a culture, and the signature of a place. For Montreal, it is a crucial tool that makes our city a beacon for the world, to the point that Montreal is known as one of the planet’s ten most festive cities. With Christmas fast approaching, Light Therapy will enhance that reputation in a big way,” said Helen Fotopoulos, the Ville de Montréal’s executive committee member responsible for culture, heritage, design and the status of women.

Forêt Forêt outside Saint-Laurent metro station – until February 26, 2012

Forêt Forêt is a landscape inspired by birch forests, where the species colonizes clearings and fills transitional spaces. Likewise, Forêt Forêt occupies and revitalizes the area around the Saint-Laurent metro station. Visitors are invited to talk to a tree, their voices animating the luminous trees and their words echoing throughout the forest. Whether people are just passing through or decide to linger for a while, Forêt Forêt is a winter oasis in the heart of the city.

Éclats de verre in Place Émilie-Gamelin – until February 26, 2012

A giant stained glass window, deconstructed into single coloured panels arranged on Place Émilie-Gamelin, a light installation in which passers by are invited to wander, becoming part of an ever-changing tableau of moving shadows and multi-coloured reflections created by the sun. By night, light sources located within the installation illuminate the polychromatic labyrinth dynamically, while an interactive video projection lights up the Hôtel des Gouverneurs. Using two spring-mounted cubes, visitors can transform the space around them by adjusting the video images and the square’s lighting and soundscape.

Projections – UQAM bell tower from Place Pasteur – until February 26, 2012

Ten different projections will light up the bell tower of UQAM’s Judith-Jasmin building for two days to one week each. Starting and ending with Trame – a tribute to key figures in Quebec animated film, created by members of the graduating class in interactive media – and continuing with a re-imagined New Year’s countdown, a reconstruction and deconstruction of the bell tower itself, springtime images, trigonometry, fragmented space, an improbable dialogue, a new kind of software, and a Red Light theme: for anyone walking through Place Pasteur this winter, there won’t be a dull moment. Note that the bell tower projections will run from Wednesday through Sunday inclusive, with no screenings on Mondays, and Tuesdays set aside for testing.

The Light Therapy installations are created and produced with the support of the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership. Forêt Forêt and Éclats de verre are the winners of the Create Winter at Quartier des Spectacles competition. A jury selected the installations from among 38 proposals submitted by 27 creators.
