WINNER: RESTAURANTSOGGI by studio -gramThe brief was simple; the client wanted a bright interior, with a kitchen on show, a direct reaction to the moody, dimly lit spaces of the local hospitality scene. Oggi is a simple and subdued interior, with a playful personality, informed by the squares and piazzas of Italy. The repetition, the materiality and the formal nature of these outdoor spaces have all influenced the outcome. JUDGES’ COMMENT‘Oggi has an immediately recognizable Italian style of the period between the two wars. It has very soft geometry with a beautiful pared down palette of colours and an intimate section of alcoves. It also has a very bright and airy feel for such a long narrow space along with a long bar which you can imagine being full all the time.’

WINNER: RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT INTERIORS Kings Cross Central - Plimsoll by Johnson NaylorJohnson Naylor created the interior architecture of all apartments and penthouses in the Plimsoll Buildings. They were also responsible for the design of the Entrance Lobby, the Residents Facilities, which include a lounge, dining room and gym, and the interiors of the Winter Garden, working with landscape designers Dan Pearson Studio.The interior architecture of the apartments responds to the unique context and surroundings of Kings Cross. The spacial composition and vertical and horizontal rhythm of the interior work in harmony with the architecture.JUDGES’ COMMENT‘Johnson Naylor have commissioned a fantastic selection of bespoke furnishings and curated artwork as well as using beautiful materials including American walnut and brass throughout the project. Altogether a stunning urban development that responds to the unique context of King’s Cross.’

WINNER: RESIDENTIAL INTERIORSLoft Panzerhalle by smartvoll architektensmartvoll won a competition in which a space of 350 sq. m should be remodelled to become an extraordinary loft apartment in the old ‘Panzerhalle’.The challenge was to preserve the historic space and environment and to fill the room with daylight, instead of artificial illumination. Furthermore, one should be confronted with the most spatial experience.JUDGES’ COMMENT‘It’s a spectacular space to begin but also a very spectacular intervention. It’s indulgent, but it looks beautifully finished with interesting and slightly amusing details. Surely an astounding space to be in.’

WINNER: LEISURE OR ENTERTAINMENT VENUESMeteor Cinema by One Plus PartnershipOne Plus Partnership wanted to pay tribute to all filmmakers, so they came up with the idea of a meteor shower. Through freezing the precise moment of a meteor shower, the designers want the audience to embrace the magnificent view of this critical moment, as well as the tremendous work behind every filmmaker.JUDGES’ COMMENT‘It’s a whole new language of cinema: innovative and confident. It has the confidence to go against the established esthetic of cinema. It’s bold and uncompromising with an integrated approach right the way through to the auditorium.’

JOINT WINNER: MUSEUM OR EXHIBITION SPACESpublic 03, by i29 interior architectsi29 interior architects designed a pavilion for the Dutch magazine Eigen Huis & Interieur during the annual design fair in RAI Amsterdam.With an architectural installation i29 strived to make a spatial experience for the visitors that surprises; an environment that should be discovered step by step.JUDGES’ COMMENTThis is a really beautiful scheme; very magical. Simple forms and clever use of mirrors and colours. It catches the imagination with a very detailed interior within a box, reflecting colours from the surrounding space.’

JOINT WINNER: MUSEUM OR EXHIBITION SPACESNTCRI Exhibition Nantou by noiznoiz was commissioned by Taiwan Design Center (TDC) to design an exhibition space for “Original Colors- Natural Colors in Contemporary Design” at National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI) in Nantou, Taiwan. The client wanted to upgrade the exhibition design quality in relation to the local exhibitions that usually took place in the museum.JUDGES’ COMMENT‘I think it’s an absolutely magical installation which has engendered a sense of fantasy and wonder into the space. Elegantly detailed and beautifully lit.’

WINNER: PUBLIC SECTORBeyazıt State Library by Tabanlioğlu ArchitectsBeyazıt State Library is the oldest and the largest library in Istanbul. The Library can be found in Beyazıt Square, the most vibrant space in the old part of the city. The jury were particularly impressed with the sensitive reorganization of the interior.JUDGES’ COMMENT‘Fantastic adaptive reuse with contemporary installations highlighting the aesthetics of a heritage framework. Elegant, minimalistic and beautifully realised. The lighting design is truly commendable.’

JOINT WINNER: LIGHTING PROJECTSCorrs Chambers Westgarth by Electrolight Electrolight were appointed to provide a lighting scheme to realise Corrs’ vision of a sophisticated and timeless aesthetic, with a focus on the reception void and casual entertaining areas. Adding to this the primary consultation spaces, including fifteen meeting and boardrooms, unite Corrs’ interface and consultation offering.JUDGES’ COMMENTS‘I think this a beautifully executed scheme which combines tonality, contrast and drama and brings that all into a corporate environment which can often be quite staid. I think they have clearly captured the essence of the brand as well. All in all a really impressive piece of lighting design’

JOINT WINNER: LIGHTING PROJECTS888 Collins Street by Ramus888 Collins is a prestigious residential development occupying the wedge where Bourke and Collins Street meet in Melbourne. The façade is flanked by soaring vertical fins, which form the focus of Ramus’ lighting design.The client brief was to articulate the architecture with light and, through that, to develop an artistic approach to the lighting design that could meet the City of Melbourne’s Public Art guidelines. In response to this we emphasized the rhythm and height created by fins on the façade by fitting each fin with custom LED fixtures. JUDGES’ COMMENTS‘It’s not just another media façade; the control system that allows weather to determine the intensity and colour of the lights appealed to all the jury.’

It is quite classic in its design form, which makes it a product that will transcend different project styles beautifully.’

It’s highly adaptable in different environments and it has the potential to be a design classic in its simplicity.’

JOINT WINNER: FURNITUREJoist Table by Daniel SchofieldThe construction of Joist Table reflects the way timber floor joists fit into structural steelwork – the Ash legs fit into the beam and two bolts on the underside of the legs pull into each other through the beam, holding the structure together and giving it its strength. The glass then rests on top located on silicone pads to stop any movement.This allows for efficient shipping, easy assembly, great strength and a conservative use of materials whilst maintaining a clean and understandable construction narrative.JUDGES’ COMMENT‘A really clever, simple and scalable design that unusually adds something fresh to the world of tables. The constructional method leads into the design which is a nice touch as there is no conflict between how it’s made and how it looks. When those things come together it’s unusual and often leads to something becoming a classic.’

JOINT WINNER: FURNITUREParentesit by ArperDesigned by Lievore Altherr Molina, Parentesit is an acoustic wall module that reduces extraneous background noise and creates a space for concentration, offering comfort for contemporary shared spaces. The bold, graphic forms are available in three shapes that can be further customised with the addition of a speaker or ambient light.JUDGES’ COMMENT‘I think this is an example of where designers have looked at the problem, taken it back to first principals, worked through and come up with something that is attractive, original and flexible.’

WINNER: EMERGING INTERIOR PRACTICE OF THE YEAROnly If Architecture PLLC - New York, United States of AmericaOnly If is a New York City- based design practice for architecture and urbanism founded in 2013 and is led by Adam Snow Frampton, AIA, who previously worked as an Associate at OMA in the Netherlands and Hong Kong, and is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University GSAPP.The practice currently consists of 6 architects and designers engaged in a range of work from interiors to housing, larger-scale urban design, research and speculation.JUDGES’ COMMENT‘Only If has taken the programme of preparing the coffee and sitting to enjoy the coffee and then going on to create a special connection to enjoy the two, which is definitely challenging – I don’t see any metro tiles or bare light bulbs. Instead, the context and the materials seem to come through in a very innovative and specific way.'

Many of these projects are internationally published and respected for their clarity and originality.JUDGES’ COMMENT‘Strong work with the same minimal and clear language as some of the other practices I have admired – I enjoyed the pops of colour which, in this case, were used to emphasise the concept and strengthen the projects overall. I like them very much.’

JOINT WINNER: INTERIOR PRACTICE OF THE YEARRobert Mills Architecture and Interiors - Melbourne & Sydney, AustraliaThe practice is known for its substantial portfolio of bespoke residences, apartments and exclusive development projects built or planned in principal Australian cities. Rob Mills Architecture and Interiors was established 25 years ago and today numbers 19 collaborators. JUDGES’ COMMENT‘The work from this studio shows a real sensitivity and beauty. There are lots of considered details; these spaces have depth and a sense of permanence. There is also a real liveliness in the projects, a lot of that has to do to with how the light plays off the materials and the use of colour with just enough layering and level of styling to create alluring spaces - especially One Hot Yoga & Pilates studio which has a real lightness of touch.’
