From April 28 to May 7, 2026, the inaugural edition of Montréal Design Week marked a turning point for the city, bringing a deeply rooted but little-exposed creative scene into the spotlight. Driven by Index-Design, organized by Archi-Design QC, and presented by Tafisa Canada, the initiative brought together the entire ecosystem and design enthusiasts around an ambitious, accessible, multidisciplinary, and resolutely open program. Over ten days, Montreal was transformed into a true design capital, confirming its status as an evolving UNESCO Design City.
More than 70 participating events and venues—exhibitions, tours, installations, talks, and open studios—transformed Montreal into an island of creative gems, revealing the richness and diversity of practices in architecture, design, decoration, and interior design. Unlike other global design capitals often defined by a dominant style, Montreal stands out for its creative freedom and constant cross-disciplinary hybridity.
This first edition made visible a collective energy already deeply rooted in the city, with strong participation from both professionals and the general public.
"Canada is moving from a quieter design scene to one that is much more assertive, visible, and internationally connected," noted Arnaud Granata, President, Index-Design / Montréal Design Week. "Montréal Design Week acts as a catalyst: it helps structure this energy and position Montreal as a new global design destination."
Highlights of the inaugural edition
A turning point for local design
Participating venues and events overwhelmingly reported that Montréal Design Week helped position the city as a design capital, while increasing their visibility, generating new contacts and clients, and elevating the role of design in society.
With this first edition, Montreal now asserts itself as an emerging international design destination, driven by a dynamic ecosystem in full structuring. Beyond the numbers, this inaugural edition responds to a clear need: structuring a thriving and diverse creative scene.
"Montreal has always had a rich and experimental design scene, but one that remained somewhat under the radar," said Sandra Heintz, General Director, Index-Design / Montréal Design Week. "This first edition reveals what Montreal design truly represents: strong collective energy, a bold new generation, and a very free approach to design."
Montréal Design Week is now establishing itself as a structuring event destined to play a key role in the visibility of Montreal and Canadian design. It reflects the vitality of the local ecosystem and its ability to mobilize collectively to promote Quebec design locally and internationally. Driven by this enthusiasm, the team is already preparing the next edition, with the ambition of strengthening international collaborations, expanding the program, and positioning Montreal among the leading destinations for contemporary design.
