WIN Awards 2016 - Leisure or Entertainment Venues Category: 1Rebel Broadgate, London by Studio C102 (United Kingdom)Studio C102’s second project for luxury boutique gym brand 1Rebel, completed in August 2015, is part of British Land’s redevelopment of Broadgate Circle, London. The 800 sqm interior builds on the design language established by Studio C102 in its previous design for 1Rebel St Mary Axe, but delivers a darker and moodier atmosphere. The spatial design responds to the geometry of the shell, while creating a distinct sense of place that meets the client’s brief that each new 1Rebel should look unique. ‘There is an honesty and integrity to the context with it being in an existing storage space. There’s a level of sophistication to the detailing although this is represented in a very industrial space. The concept and narrative is carried through to the very last detail which was unanimously well received by the jury.’ TW

WIN Awards 2016 - Leisure or Entertainment Venues Category: The Fillmore Philadelphia by EwingCole (United States)The Fillmore Philadelphia opened on October 1, 2015. A former Ajax Metal Company building (circa 1893), The Fillmore has been adapted into a 51,000 sq. ft live music venue. Philadelphia’s history, the existing factory, and the Fillmore’s legacy inspired the interior design, resulting in a contemporary entertainment destination. Ajax Hall provides a central location for non-concert events and also functions as the connector to the 2,500-capacity main event space. ‘A great example of the reuse of a building from an industrial steel workshop to a fine concert hall. What’s brilliant is the simple use of space with a clear simple layout and introduction of raised seating which is done in keeping with the industrial quality of the space; as is the choice of exposed lighting rigs. The chandeliers are a bold move which, along with the curtains and the lighting, add a sense of drama that is needed for a concert hall.’ MC ‘A fantastic adaptive reuse project carried out with confidence and strong intention. The project expresses the energy and richness of urban history by creating a range of destinations, dramatic spaces, lighting and materials.’ SJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Leisure or Entertainment Venues Category: Meteor Cinema by One Plus Partnership Limited (Guangzhou, China)One Plus Partnership wanted to pay tribute to all filmmakers, so they came up with the idea of a meteor shower. A meteor shower is a spike in the number of meteors or ‘shooting stars’ that streak through the night sky. It’s a wondrous astrological phenomenon, yet lasts only a moment. Through freezing the precise moment of a meteor shower, the designers want the audience to embrace the magnificent view of this critical moment, as well as the tremendous work behind every filmmaker. ‘It’s a whole new language of cinema: innovative and confident. It has the confidence to go against the established esthetic of cinema. It’s bold and uncompromising with an integrated approach right the way through to the auditorium.’ LG ‘A dramatic expression of meteor shower forms within an interior space - very intriguing. The designers have expressed the emotions and attributes that filmmakers use in their storyline creating an amazing journey through the spaces.’ SJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Leisure or Entertainment Venues Category: Times Ocean Club House by KLID ( Kris Lin International Design) (Guangzhou, China)The whole design features the lines consisted of dots and a surface consisted of lines, then a three-dimensional space consisted of surfaces in different angles. Every line and every surface is something, which is carefully carved by the sculptor, and the final interior space design itself is an artwork. ‘What we like about this project is the execution; the build quality and the lovely use of materials.’ MC ‘Great use of materials with a mix of soft and hard finishes and shapes. Origami inspired volumes with very subtle and pleasing lighting – a great space to be in.’ SJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Leisure or Entertainment Venues Category: Wuxi Barberia Shop by S5 Design&Consulting Co., Ltd (Wuxi, China)Taking into account the character of the client, an independent brand, and the specific location of the project, the designers delicately provoke a conversation between the histories of this space, both a commercial space and a salon, by drawing attention to these distinctive stories within the now trendy loft/punk space. The scenarios have been meticulously unfolded providing an overwhelming visual experience to the eyes of every customer, giving them a half real and half imaginary feeling through their enjoyment of the space. This barber shop is successful because it is a holistic, immersive experience that would transport you to a different place.’ TW ‘Very slick and moody - great combination of hexagonal and abstract shapes, mosaics, stainless steel plates and large circular mirrors to break monotony.’ SJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Leisure or Entertainment Venues Category: York Theatre Royal by De Matos Ryan (York, United Kingdom)The redevelopment of the Grade II* listed building unlocks the full potential of a complex site that had developed incrementally over 270 years. It has created additional space the theatre urgently needed in order to appeal to and engage a wider community, bring more people into the building and create the opportunity to increase revenue, enabling it to be more financially resilient in the future. Consulting with key stakeholders, including staff members, the Youth Theatre, audience and general public determined the changes needed to improve the visitor experience, create a context for a sustainable business and improve the theatre’s scope for high quality creative output. ‘The architect’s interventions enhance an already amazing space. What I’m most impressed with is how they have obviously worked quite closely with the theatre itself to reconsider its business case, moving forward in a time when there are cuts to arts funding.’ JG ‘A great adaptive reuse maintaining the character of the old with a contemporary addition - highly contextual. Functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces, integrated strategy to holistic sustainability and long term value creation’. SJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Public Sector Category: Beyazıt State Library by Tabanlioglu Architects (Istanbul, Turkey)Beyazıt State Library is the oldest and the largest library in İstanbul, founded in 1884 as the “Kütüphane-i Umumi-i Osmani”. The Library can be found in Beyazıt Square adjacent to Beyazıt Mosque built by Sultan Beyazıt II and completed in 1506. Beyazıt Square is today the most vibrant space in the old part of the city. The restoration of the State Library has involved the sensitive reorganization of the interior and careful restoration of the building fabric with its prominent multi-domed roof. A modest extension, respectful of the scale of the existing building has been added to the northeast façade of the existing Library.‘The architect’s hand is very light; it feels quite egoless architecturally.’ TW ‘The architects have shown great restraint by enhancing the fantastic context of the building itself. They have overcome significant political and technical challenges to reach the end result. WIN Awards 2016 - Public Sector Category: MLC Centre Food Court by Luchetti Krelle (Sydney, Australia)Opened 39 years ago and designed by Australia’s iconic modernist Harry Seidler, the MLC Centre houses some of the city’s most exclusive collections of jewelry and fashion boutiques. The food court, an ever popular meeting place for shoppers and local office workers was due for a well-deserved makeover and Luchetti Krelle were tasked with improving and updating the quality of new and existing business’ both aesthetically and operationally. ‘Taking an existing underground space and engendering the light and sculptural form to the ceiling with a simple palette of materials, is a bold decision, but it’s worked extremely well. I do enjoy the bespoke detailing and the lack of down lights!’ TW ‘Excellent use of earthy materials as a contrast to the white minimal building environment. WIN Awards 2016 - Public Sector Category: Sainte-Anne Academy - Futuristic School of Tomorrow by Taktik design (Montreal, Canada)Designing a futuristic elementary school of tomorrow in a 120,000 sq. ft heritage building built in 1896— that’s Sainte-Anne Academy’s challenge. From room layout to furniture design to communications, Taktik Design’s team undertook this innovative project. They were given carte blanche to create an efficient environment that accommodates the latest teaching standards. The fun-filled environment at the Academy was designed with kids in mind; the space is less of an interpretation of their imaginations and more of a blank canvas for their creativity. ‘I enjoyed the sense of fun running through the building and the way that all of the rooms and spaces appear to be thought through and flowed between each other. The lighting was minimal and effective, and I can see that a lot of thought has gone into the safety aspects – a lot of practicality in the thinking.’ LG ‘The presentation was outstanding.’ SJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Museum or Exhibition Spaces Category: Metro Pictures Gallery by 1100 Architect (New York, United States)1100 Architect’s renovation of Metro Pictures completely transformed the gallery’s exhibition spaces and visitor experience. By reformulating an earlier layout—and without adding to the building’s overall footprint—the design increased the total exhibition space by 16 percent. Whereas it was once arrayed as three sequential galleries, each similarly sized, 1100 Architect consolidated those earlier spaces into two larger galleries linked by a smaller transitional space, creating more expansive rooms and giving the gallerists more curatorial flexibility. ‘I love that way that the floor becomes a major feature by reflecting the visual art. The immaculate detailing was universally admired by the jury – a stunning project beautifully executed’. LG

WIN Awards 2016 - Museum or Exhibition Spaces Category: NTCRI Exhibition “Original Colors - Natural Colors in Contemporary Design” by noiz (Nantou, Taiwan)noiz was commissioned by Taiwan Design Center (TDC) to design an exhibition space for “Original Colors- Natural Colors in Contemporary Design” at National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI) in Nantou, Taiwan. The client wanted to upgrade the exhibition design quality in relation to the local exhibitions that usually took place in the museum. ‘I think it’s an absolutely magical installation which has engendered a sense of fantasy and wonder into the space. Elegantly detailed and beautifully lit.’ TW ‘Fantastic lighting effects creating a very dramatic ambience throughout the spaces. Fine and elegant detailing for the exhibit stands, allowing the artworks to take centre stage.’ SJ

WIN Awards 2016 - Museum or Exhibition Spaces Category: public 03 by i29 interior architects(Amsterdam, Netherlands)i29 interior architects designed a pavilion for the Dutch magazine Eigen Huis & Interieur during the annual design fair in RAI Amsterdam. With an architectural installation i29 strived to make a spatial experience for the visitors that surprises; an environment that should be discovered step by step. The ‘house’ has been reduced to the essence; open and closed surfaces, walls and volumes, sight lines. ‘A really beautiful scheme; very magical. Simple forms and clever use of mirrors and colours. Catches the imagination by having a very detailed interior within a box, reflecting colours from the surrounding spaces.’ TW 'Seems to capture an essence of what a style magazine might want to invoke without the complexity of numerous texts that one has to read – a really experiential installation.’ MC ‘A journey full of surprises; use of bold colours and mirrors as a contrast to the minimal white enclosure.
