On Tuesday, June 13th, at the Society of Registered Architects (SARA) annual Design Awards Gala, New York City-based DXA Studio was awarded a Design Award of Excellence for its design of The Rowan Astoria. The award recognizes and celebrates firms that have accomplished design achievements in architecture.
SARA’s criteria for the award include considerations of overall design aesthetics, a project’s response to urban conditions, its community relevance, and a firm’s use of creativity, ingenuity, and innovation.
Located in Astoria, Queens, The Rowan Astoria is one of the largest new residential projects in the area, with 46 condos, a private garden, a children’s room, a dog wash room, and more. The building is connected to a freestanding glass lobby topped with a green roof, and features a facade of fine masonry that steeps in and out to provide a variety of street views. The Rowan sits in the heart of the neighborhood and utilizes natural light, organic materials, and inviting foliage to offer guests and visitors an alluring escape.
In May, the building also received praise from NYCxDESIGN when it was named a finalist for the 2023 NYCxDESIGN Award for Multi-Unit Housing. The award recognizes New York City architects and makers for projects of superior design, and DXA Studio was honored alongside a host of prestigious firms.
In addition to its distinctions for The Rowan, DXA Studio was also voted the popular choice winner of the Architizer A+Award for Best Residential Firm. The awards program is the world’s largest for architecture and spaces, placing DXA Studio on an international stage and championing it as a leader in design.
About DXA Studio
DXA Studio is a New York City-based architecture firm whose work masterfully and consistently strikes a balance between seemingly opposing forces. DXA Studio’s projects combine the art with the science of architecture, design innovation with technical excellence, contemporary considerations with a sense of craft, and a modern outlook with a respect for history and context.
The work of the studio – both built and unbuilt - has received numerous design awards, including several Best of Design Awards from The Architect’s Newspaper, awards from the American Institute of Architects, and the Society of Registered Architects (SARA) awards. The firm’s first monograph, titled DXA NYC: 10 Years of Building on History, was published by ORO in June 2022.
