The UQAM Centre de Design presents Heinz Waibl. The Creative Journey, exploring the creative and professional path of Heinz Waibl, a major figure in the Milanese graphic design scene of the 1950's. The exhibition covers his time in Europe and the United States (with an interlude in South Africa) and includes more than 350 Waibl artefacts – posters, sketches, logo studies, brochures, publications, ads, selected photographs – as well as his correspondence with Max Bill, Max Huber and Georges Vantongerloo.
Heinz Waibl. The Creative Journey
Heinz Waibl is best known for his projects for Rai, Rinascente, Atkinsons, Olivetti, Pirelli, and Flos, as well as his collaboration with the design firm Unimark International, developing brand symbols for JCPenney and American Airlines (with Massimo Vignelli).
Waibl was not the only Italian to try his luck in America – Massimo Vignelli, Giulio Cittato and Piero Ottinetti also came to work in Chicago – but in 1971, Waibl returned to Italy, where he would build on his experience in the emerging field of corporate identity.
The curators adopted a parallel approach to the exhibition: Nicoletta Ossanna Cavadini, Director of m.a.x. museo in Chiasso, Switzerland, revisits Waibl's beginnings in Milan as well as the period after his return to Italy, while Alessandro Colizzi, professor at the UQAM School of Design, covers the American experience of Waibl and his contemporaries.
