For this 2nd project at the Pensionnat du Saint-Nom-de-Marie, a technological room was created to allow the young girls of the establishment to discover the principles of robotics. This new innovative venue, with the institution’s emblematic colours, allows students to expand their technological skills in robotics, as well as other activities, such as 3D digital printing, laser cutting, video filming on green screens and seaming.
The space offers different distinct work zones consistent with the successive stages of a project realization: ideation, design, assembly, programming and execution. For example, a student will be able to firstly imagine her project in one of two creative spaces, the first open on the whole class and the second closed from the class, allowing for greater concentration.
She will then head over to the collaboration area to share her ideas to take her project further. The long high table in the heart of the room will serve as a place of assembly for the materialization of the robot. Moreover, the teacher's station can join this central high table furniture and serve as a place of gathering and collaboration.
A large portion of the main room has been reserved for computer stations used for robotics programming. Once the robots programmed, the class will meet in the open space where different path mats, stored under custom benches, can be rolled out on the ground to test the small robots.
The room has been furnished with technological equipment for dynamic group work and for the discovery of graphic arts (a Smart Kapp wall device to record and share notes, and a Surface Studio computer). It provides also tangible elements such giant paper-surfaced tables and entire walls with writable surfaces. For the proper functioning of the premises, several custom storage units have been designed, including a large wall unit to store students' materials and projects.
Upon entering the Alt-o-tech, a mural illustrating the creative process from the reflection stage to the explosion of ideas sets the tone and instils a positive and creative energy to the premises. The signage of each space reflects this journey of ideas. This new environment allows the inventive spirit of the students to be limitless and to make them the innovators of tomorrow.
