For the second edition of the Master Class series 2015, Index-design will receive architect Brendan MacFarlane. Seize the opportunity to exchange for an evening with the co-founder of Jakob+MacFarlane on the challenges of working on projects that leave nobody indifferent.
Jakob + MacFarlane architects
Established in 1992, Jakob + MacFarlane architects is an agency of multicultural and multidisciplinary architects based in Paris, France. Its work explores digital technologies at times as abstract contribution and at times a means of manufacturing, using new materials as way of creating a more flexible and responsible environment.
The co-founder, Brendan MacFarlane, was born in New Zealand. He obtained a bachelors’ degree in architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture, Sci-ARC, in Los Angeles, 1984. He went on to achieve his Master's degree of architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of design in 1990. In collaboration with Dominique Jakob, they realized several striking and symbolic architectural projects of in France, amongst them Restaurant Georges in the Pompidou Center, Docks – City of fashion and design in Paris or the Orange Cube and the Euronews headquarters, both located in Lyon.
The projects currently in progress include the Conservatoire de Danse et Musique à Noisy-le-Sec, the reconstruction of a Gaumont-Pathé theatre complex in Paris and the construction of a multi-usage tower and the downtown area of Knokke-Heist, in Belgium. Brendan MacFarlane has taught in several architecture schools internationally, in particular the Harvard School of Design, Sci-Arc, at the University of Florida, the Bartlett School of Architecture and is the special guest judge for the Architectural Association of London, also being a jury member for the AZ Awards for design excellence 2015, awarded by Azure Magazine.
The work of Jakob + MacFarlane is recognized around the world, receiving the International Architecture Award awarded by the Chicago Athenaeum in 2014 and nominated for the Mies van der Rohe European Architecture Award in 2015.
The fruit of their labor has been published in several prestigious publications, such as the Architectural Record, A+U, Architecture Now and the Architectural Review. Their projects appeared on display in various museums around the world, notably the Pompidou Center in Paris, the SFMOMA in San Francisco, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, the Victoria & Albert Museum of London, the Artist Space in New York and the Museum of Architecture in Moscow.
