ANX / Aaron Neubert Architects is pleased to announce the completion of Slot House, a 2,400-square-foot single-family residence perched on a steep up-slope site overlooking the Silver Lake hills and reservoir. Conceived as a tightly stacked volume embedded within the hillside, the project transforms a challenging topography into a dynamic, spatially rich living environment.
The design employs a layered architectural strategy of carving, retaining, and bridging to negotiate the terrain. The garage is recessed into the hillside, forming a solid base for two levels of living space above. This approach allows the structure to recede into the slope, where a series of retaining walls create a private rear terrace—an unexpected outdoor room carved from the earth and sheltered by the surrounding landscape. This introspective condition offers a quiet counterpoint to the more open, street-facing façade.
A bridge extending from the second floor connects directly to the upper portion of the site, stitching the home into the hillside and enabling seamless circulation between the built environment and the natural terrain. This gesture reinforces the project’s core ambition: to integrate architecture and landscape as a continuous experience.
At the heart of the residence, a continuous skylight, aligned with views at each end, stair, hallway, and bridge, introduces daylight deep into the interior. This linear aperture establishes a visual corridor from the street-facing porch through to the rear terrace, enhancing spatial continuity and drawing natural light down through the circulation spine.
Primary living spaces are organized as open, flowing volumes that promote movement and layered views. Sightlines extend from the entry porch through the living and dining areas toward the private terrace beyond, dissolving boundaries between inside and outside. Carefully positioned glazing frames views of the surrounding mountains and reservoir, while preserving privacy from neighboring properties.
Compact in footprint, yet expansive in experience, Slot House exemplifies ANX’s thoughtful response to complex sites. Through a careful balance of openness and enclosure, exposure and refuge, the project reimagines hillside living as a sequence of interconnected spatial moments.
